Bob Byron, an Irngon Volunteer ’ Fireman, has passed a state test through the state hoard o f medical examiners, to receive his E M T I rating ” I carry a trauma kit in my personal vehicle and have a portable radio,” said Byron ” 1 am trained to administer some drugs and I can start intravenous liquids ” A vehicle with special equipment is needed to get the trained First Responder to the scene o f an acci dent, according to Buchanan. “ The care a patient gets the first 10 or II minutes can make a lot o f d if ference ” “ The purchasing o f a rapid response vehicle is one o f our main objectives," said Buchanan The Ir rigon Rural Fire District hopes to have a vehicle fully equipped with basic life support and rescue equip ment this year “ It depends on money available.” he added ” 1 would like to encourage public- participation at the M orrow County Medical Board meetings.” said Byron. W ith the volunteer assistance o f Mrs Cheryl Tallman and Mrs Sharon Meyers, both local nurses, and Mrs Rosalyn Swart, medical secretary, the physicians screened over 130 students in the free clinic. By my reckoning, their generosi ty saved parents over $2,405, collec tively since t)ie going price for an athletic physical is about $18 50 per student But more important, as head Varsity Football Coach Dirksen commented, "their willingness to do something like this enables some kids to participate in sports who otherwise would not he able to .” I agree with Dirksen and am a believer that being part o f athletic programs can teach kids lessons they will remember all o f their lives Lessons about co u ra ge, self- disciplinc. team work, and the satisfaction o f a game well-played win or lose. I am sure these sen timents arc shared by Donna Barton. Kevin F.gan. Tom French.
