Irrigon receives $3,000 to open house
train first responders
By Joyce Hensley
First Responders will be attending
training sessions in Irrigon in the
near future
A $3,000 check was given to O r
ville Buchanan, chairman o f the Ir
rigon Rural Fire District, by the
Morrow County Medical board,
recently, for the training o f private
citizens, volunteer firemen, wives o f
volunteer firemen and anybody else
interested in becoming a First
Responder - someone who arrives at
the scene o f an accident, a heart at
tack. or any other emergency which
requires an ambulance call; pro
viding basic life support to the pa
tient and traffic control to insure the
safety o f the patient, while waiting
for the ambulance to arrive
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
(C P R ); how to treat for suspected
shock, make a patient comfortable,
get him ready for transportation, and
general first aid will be part o f the
curriculum.
Cheryl Hobbs, Brenda Newport.
Burrel C ooley, Bill C oolev. Ken
Lamb, and Janet Cooley are First
Responders in Irngon.
Steve Mackey, the new Public
Safety Director, has an Emergency
Medical Technician I lE M T I)
rating, one step above a First
Responder " T h e difference bet
ween an E M T I and a First
Responder is the depth o f instruc
tion.” said Mackey "T h e big d if
ference is the type o f equipment an
E M T I is trained to use ” It takes
123 hours o f training to receive an
E M T I rating.
Bob Byron, an Irngon Volunteer ’
Fireman, has passed a state test
through the state hoard o f medical
examiners, to receive his E M T I
rating ” I carry a trauma kit in my
personal vehicle and have a portable
radio,” said Byron ” 1 am trained
to administer some drugs and I can
start intravenous liquids ”
A vehicle with special equipment
is needed to get the trained First
Responder to the scene o f an acci
dent, according to Buchanan. “ The
care a patient gets the first 10 or II
minutes can make a lot o f d if
ference ”
“ The purchasing o f a rapid
response vehicle is one o f our main
objectives," said Buchanan The Ir
rigon Rural Fire District hopes to
have a vehicle fully equipped with
basic life support and rescue equip
ment this year “ It depends on
money available.” he added
” 1 would like to encourage public-
participation at the M orrow County
Medical Board meetings.” said
Byron. "Ir n g o n needs public opi
nion to help sway the decision (fo r
a rapid response vehicle) and get the
ball rolling ”

Doctors make gigantic house call
T o the Editor:
I was reminded recently o f the old
complaint that you “ just can’ t get
do ctors to pay house calls
a n ym o re.”
Not true
D octors
Carpenter and Rasmussen with the
help o f medical student Peter John
payed a gigantic house call to R iver
side High School this September,
providing athletic physicals for
youths needing e*ams to meet
District requirements and O S A A
guidelines. W ith the volunteer
assistance o f Mrs Cheryl Tallman
and Mrs Sharon Meyers, both local
nurses, and Mrs Rosalyn Swart,
medical secretary, the physicians
screened over 130 students in the
free clinic.
By my reckoning, their generosi
ty saved parents over $2,405, collec
tively since t)ie going price for an
athletic physical is about $18 50 per
student But more important, as head
Varsity Football Coach Dirksen
commented, "their willingness to do
something like this enables some
kids to participate in sports who
otherwise would not he able to .” I
agree with Dirksen and am a
believer that being part o f athletic
programs can teach kids lessons they
will remember all o f their lives
Lessons about co u ra ge, self-
disciplinc. team work, and the
satisfaction o f a game well-played
win or lose. I am sure these sen
timents arc shared by Donna Barton.
Kevin F.gan. Tom French. John Col-
vett and Dirk Dirksen. all coaches
who also donated their time (hat
evening as well
