I9«7 Traffic deaths down from last year County Sheriff considers taking over Irrigon law enforcement Fifty-nine people died in Oregon traffic accidents in July, according to the Motor Vehicles Division The 1987 figures is down Irotn Ju ly 1986 when there were 64 traffic deaths The sear total so tar is also down There have heen 318 C>rcgon traffic deaths during the first seven months of the year, compared with .Vt2 in the same period in 1986 The July 1987 figure inc ludes two traffic deaths which occurred on Oregon roads during the Ft*unh of July holiday weekend There were five double fatality accidents during the month These occurred in M arion. Clackamas, Klamath. Umatilla and Multnomah counties The fatalities include II drivers, nine passengers, ten motorcyclists, four pedestrians and five bicycle riders. Thc Morrow County Sheriff would take over law enforcement in Irrigon if the city accepts a proposal trom the agency for its services in side the city limits. Die Irrigon City Council heard the proposal at its July 14 meeting, but tabled any action until August Mayor Don F.ppcnbach said the council needed more time to review the proposal If accepted, the Irrigon Police Department would he closed Under the intergovernmental agreement the sheriff s department would avsign two deputies to the ci ty full time There would be no decrease in police services.
