Kcnnison said “ W e do know il w ill lock up productive land so we are not able to harvest it and work it as we would lik e .” he said The Dept o f Forestry said clear and specific management rule» that can he uniformly applied were necessary The forestry board recognized that iorcst lands next to small streams contain a unique con cent rat ion o f public values The rules, the department said, are designed to recognize the public's in terest in growing and harvesting timber while protecting the soil, water quality, aquatic habitat, and w ildlife habitat resources A requirement for the keeping o f conifers and other vegetation along witn ocau standing trees and down ed timber within the riparian areas is necessary tor wildlife and provides large woody debris for improved stream structure, the department said "People need to understand that it infringes upon us and we do not know where it all w ill end They keep pushing us o il our own land for the good o f the fish and the e lk ." Kcnnison said The legislature is infringing on how wc handle our land for the benefit o f the special interest groups W e're trying to do a good job with thinning and other forest practices, he said "But the legislature has locked in our lands It means we can harvest less timber in order to make a playground for the rich and famous W c try to be compatible with hunters and fisherm en," he said “ W c don't charge the Dept o f Fish and W ildlife lor grazing elk and deer on our land, but wc do charge cattle farmers tor grazing their animals on our land “ Ih e riparian management ruling basically forces us to go to a Ice hun ting system, which wc don't like, he said W e try to he compatible, but they want it all It's not right to lose the right to control our land, but wc arc losing it. I'm against it. W c fought hard before the state legislature, but we just didn't get heard O ur whole democratic way o f life is going and socialism is creeping in. Kcnnison said “ I don't know where it w ill all e n d ."
