I can understand the restrictions on
public lands, but not lor private Ian
downers. It's making it tough to stay
in business, he said
When we lose the right to conduct
our own business on our own land,
we lose our democratic way ot life.
Kcnnison »aid. and we re losing it
It's tot> st>on to tell what the long
range impact to Kinzua and Hepp
ncr w ill he. but there w ill be an e f
fect. Kcnnison said “ W e do know
il w ill lock up productive land so we
are not able to harvest it and work
it as we would lik e .” he said
The Dept o f Forestry said clear
and specific management rule» that
can he uniformly applied were
necessary
The forestry board
recognized that iorcst lands next to
small streams contain a unique con
cent rat ion o f public values The
rules, the department said, are
designed to recognize the public's in
terest in growing and harvesting
timber while protecting the soil,
water quality, aquatic habitat, and
w ildlife habitat resources
A requirement for the keeping o f
conifers and other vegetation along
witn ocau standing trees and down
ed timber within the riparian areas
is necessary tor wildlife and provides
large woody debris for improved
stream structure, the department
said
"People need to understand that it
infringes upon us and we do not
know where it all w ill end They
keep pushing us o il our own land for
the good o f the fish and the e lk ."
Kcnnison said
The legislature is infringing on
how wc handle our land for the
benefit o f the special interest groups
W e're trying to do a good job with
thinning and other forest practices,
he said
"But the legislature has
locked in our lands It means we can
harvest less timber in order to
make a playground for the rich and
famous W c try to be compatible
with hunters and fisherm en," he
said “ W c don't charge the Dept o f
Fish and W ildlife lor grazing elk and
deer on our land, but wc do charge
cattle farmers tor grazing their
animals on our land “
Ih e riparian management ruling
basically forces us to go to a Ice hun
ting system, which wc don't like, he
said W e try to he compatible, but
they want it all
It's not right to lose the right to
control our land, but wc arc losing
it. I'm against it. W c fought hard
before the state legislature, but we
just didn't get heard O ur whole
democratic way o f life is going and
socialism is creeping in. Kcnnison
said “ I don't know where it w ill all
e n d ."
