Elijah, stayed on the dairy farm in Wiscon sin The old farm house that Men / o ' s lather built there in 1843 is still standing In Kanvis. the family was in diver sified farm ing with livestock This w a s a change from the dairy farm mg in Wisconsin M cn/o and Mary Jane's five older children were horn at Muscotah. At chison County, Kansas This pioneering fam ily decided to move West when the drought and grasshopper infestation occurred in Kansas in the late I87l)'s M en/o and family made the move to Oregon m 1882 W hile livin g at Comstock. Men /o worked mainly in logging hauling logs down Irom the hills and loading them on fiat railcars using a tall spar p«)lc derric k about 30 feet tall and a team o f good horses Sometime in 1884. M en/o. who wanted to get hack to dry land larm ing as it was in Kansas (without the grasshoppers and drought) and knowing there was land available lor homesteading in Eastern Oregon, made the trip to Um atilla County (as the area was then in 1884) I atcr in I8H3.
