H e p p n e r'» g irls finished in second place in the overall team race w ith M) points C u lver won the g irls meet w ith 99 points Head track coach Dale C onklin was pleased w ith the performances o f his tw o teams “ We asked some people for a lot fo r us and they gave i t . '' C onklin said " F o r this early in the season we perform ed as w ell as can he es pec ted " Heppner'» Ashley Conklin was the hoys highest perform er in the meet w ith (O'-j points C o nklin won the long and triple jum ps at 19 11 'A and 39 3 respectively He also placed se cond in the 1(8) meter dash w ith a personal hest time o f 1 1 9 He was on the first place 44(1 yard relay team o f Jason Dougherty, W jyn e W ilgers. and Harney I indsay which clocked 47 h Freshmen sensation K im Slookry paced the g irls learn w ith 19 points She placed first in the I NX) meter run in a lime o l 5 49 9 and was sr cond in the I (8) meter high hurdles in a time o l IK N. both personal bests Stookes was also on the lourth place mile relay team o f Dorothy Hays. K im Saver and Sandi Turner also placed second in the 440 meter relay w ith a 37 3 showing Turner closed out the scoring by leaping 4 b in the high jum p, good for fourih place The Heppner thinciads competed in a four way meet at l m atilla on Tuesday and along w ith lone and Riverside, w ill host the 22 team 19th annual M orrow (H u nts Invitational at l in a lilla on Saturday D istrict 7 A and K A schools w ill take part in the premiere Class " A F-astern Oregon meet in which field events w ill kick o ft at l l a m and running events starting at 12 30 p m Favorites in the boys field include Heppner. I rt*i » 14 late 12 4 laa< i«k ArtMctaai | 12 < -w*- 9 IH Mustangs begin with baseball loss By Ashley C o n k lin T roy Hyatt pitched a mvhitter in the first game and a sacrifice hunt hv Scon Davis in the eighth inning helped give Heppner v hasehall team a doubleheader sweep over the Stan fie ld Tigers last Saturday The tw o wins ( 6 0 . 11 10) moved the Muoangv. to a 3-0 league record in die C olum bia Bavin Conference and a first place tie w ith Pilot Rock It was also the first time in over five years the Mustangs had swept a doublehcader Hyatt, appearing in his first game o f the season, walked none and »truckout I I T ige r hatters The Mustangs had si* errors in the first game which denied Hyatt a perfect game John Kenny supported Hvatt with an K B l-trip le in the th ird inning to bnng home Joe T aylo r who had walked Kenny came home on an cr ro r on his trip le David Pedro clubbed a double and later came home on a passed ball, also in the th ird inning Russell B ritt also went 2 lo r 4 tor Heppner in the first game In the nightcap the game went back and forth before Davis game winning bunt I railing 9 7 entering the bottom ot the sesenth. I would prefer the stalk method Ihe Heppner public lib ra ry has a couple different hooks on turkey hunting that would be w orth checking out before ihe season begins H ere’ s a couple safely tips to follow w hile stalk hunting turkeys A lw ays keep in mtrid that the turkev you heard and are now stalking could be another hunter and until you actually sec the turkev. vou should keep that possibility in your mind A careless hunter could costly mistake a man craw lin g through the timber tor a turkey It s happened before so please be careful and good luc k Trout fishing at W illo w Creek Reservoir has been lairls slow the last couple weeks Probably due to the amount o l mud in the lake resulting from the w inter run o f f I w ould imagine after the lake clears up Trout fishing should pick up I haven't heard o l anv Smallmouth bass being caught vet but as soon as the lake warms up they should nxive into shallow water and start hittin g I'v e always had luck bass fishing with a m ghuraw lcr on the bottom Although some sportsmen prefer fishing with Ihe spinner bails Roth tac tic * have prosed successful on W illo w Creek Reservoir H opefully this summer the lake w ill give up some bigger bass la s t summer about one in every ten was worth keeping The Smallmouth bass is just about the best tighten fish I have caught W hat's embarrassing is when vixi hook a little one and it feels like you've got a lunker on the end o f your pole And you turn to your buddy and te ll him how nice your fish lecls And then reel in an eight inch bass So I learned a long time ago, not to sav a word until I see the fish w e ll." he said "T ro y and John had triples and David.
