Mustangs begin with baseball loss
By Ashley C o n k lin
T roy Hyatt pitched a mvhitter in
the first game and a sacrifice hunt hv
Scon Davis in the eighth inning
helped give Heppner v hasehall team
a doubleheader sweep over the Stan

The tw o wins ( 6 0 . 11 10) moved
the Muoangv. to a 3-0 league record
in die C olum bia Bavin Conference
and a first place tie w ith Pilot Rock
It was also the first time in over five
years the Mustangs had swept a

Hyatt, appearing in his first game

The Mustangs had si* errors in the

David Pedro clubbed a double and

T urkey season begins A p ril IK and runs through
May 10 for anyone who received a tag from the
Department o f Fivh and W ild life
W ith the W ild turkey being the most d iffic u lt
game in North Am erica lo hunt, it's d iffic u lt to
know what the success rate w ill be
I recommend plenty o t scouting before the season
begins Veteran turkey hunters claim it s a g<«>»l idea
to try and locate an ole T om 's roost After you have done this, irv being
w ith in 21X) yards o f the roost an hour before day light c aretully listening
fo r the tom to start gobbling When shooting hours begin, it's time to
start your stalk I f you can get w ith in 40 yards and positivels identity
the bird as being a tom tu rke y. try tor a head or nec k shot, tor a sure kill
There arc pros and cons on stalk hunting turkeys After reading several
Nx>ks on turkey hunting. I would prefer the stalk method Ihe Heppner
public lib ra ry has a couple different hooks on turkey hunting that would
be w orth checking out before ihe season begins
H ere’ s a couple safely tips to follow w hile stalk hunting turkeys
A lw ays keep in mtrid that the turkev you heard and are now stalking
could be another hunter and until you actually sec the turkev. vou should
keep that possibility in your mind A careless hunter could costly mistake
a man craw lin g through the timber tor a turkey It s happened before
so please be careful and good luc k
Trout fishing at W illo w Creek Reservoir has been lairls slow the last
couple weeks Probably due to the amount o l mud in the lake resulting
from the w inter run o f f I w ould imagine after the lake clears up Trout
fishing should pick up
I haven't heard o l anv Smallmouth bass being caught vet but as soon
as the lake warms up they should nxive into shallow water and start
hittin g
I'v e always had luck bass fishing with a m ghuraw lcr on the bottom
Although some sportsmen prefer fishing with Ihe spinner bails Roth tac
tic * have prosed successful on W illo w Creek Reservoir
H opefully this summer the lake w ill give up some bigger bass la s t
summer about one in every ten was worth keeping
The Smallmouth bass is just about the best tighten fish I have caught
W hat's embarrassing is when vixi hook a little one and it feels like you've
got a lunker on the end o f your pole And you turn to your buddy and
te ll him how nice your fish lecls And then reel in an eight inch bass
So I learned a long time ago, not to sav a word until I see the fish
w e ll." he said "T ro y and John had
triples and David. Craig, and Russell
all had doubles
“ I hope our pitching continues to
be this g o o d ," W icks added, "b u t
we do need to work on our defense
and cut down our errors "
Hntt im proved his record to 2 (I
with the win in the second game and
