Kilkenny family for Pioneer Picnic By Justine Weatherford The Irish of Morrow County con stituted a considerable segment of its population around the turn of the century One of the outstanding leaders of this gn>up was John Sheridan Kilkenny, then age 20. who arrived in Heppner in May. 1890. with James Carty . another leader of the Gaelic invasion With the assistance of their established friend William Hughes, they obtained a band of sheep and set up head quarters in Lower Sand Hollow In 1898, John married Rose Ann Cur ran Earley in the first mamage in the newly built St Patrick's Catholic Church in Heppner Jim Carty. not to be outdone, returned to Ireland and prtKeeded to marry Maria Curran, sister of Rose Ann In the early I9UH Jim and Maria moved to their homestead in Juniper Canyon west of Sand Hollow and set up their own headquarters In February. 1915. Rose Ann was killed in Pendleton in a tragic acci dent This left John alone and the sole custodian of the children. Rose Ellen. John Francis, Sara. William P and Mary Ann. the eldest 16 and the youngest five In the spring of I9W. prior to Rose Ann's death. John had purchased from George Currm a 20.000 acre ranch with headquarters on Hinton Creek John had already acquired a substantial heard of cattle and then enlarged his sheep holding to approx imatclyl K),000 head of breeding ewes In 1917, John married Untie Russell from Condon, and to this union were born llcne. Colleen and Robert Joseph During the height of his operation in the I920's. John had under his control over 40,000 acres of land which he owned, leased, or held under Forest Service permits After spring lambing the sheep expanded from 14 to 17 bands with a like number of herders and untold numbers of dogs total employees during the lambing season would reach 40 to SO men Regular lamb ing camps were established at Hin ton Creek, the Thompson Camp. Butter Creek, Mud Springs. Sand Hollow. Bowman Ranch and the Blacksmith Shop John would visit and supervise all of these camps, sometimes on a daily basis John's industry was prodigious Throughout his life he anise between 5 and 5 30 a in He dnivc his workmen and children and did not spare himself "His impatience with the indolent was matched only by his patience with the willing performer" He was always interested in the con mwersial issues of the day and delighted in arguing about them In 1938. he developed a growth on his left jaw This turned into a malignancy and he was placed in St Anthony Hospital in fYndleton in the fall of 1939 With the left side of his jaw completely gone, he went to his God in the presence of most of his family on November 29. 1939, almost fifty years after he first set his feet on the soil of Morrow County which he had grown to dearly love The descendants of John Sheridan Kilkenny and his wives Rose Ann and Lottie are in charge of the ar rangements for the 1986 Memorial Weekend Picnic at the Morrow County Eairgmunds on Sunday. (Miller) Smith Exta D Smith, a retired high school teacher of history, died recently in a Portland area care center at age 83 Interment was at Odd Fellows Cemetery in The Dalles A native of The Dalles, she tjughi history and international relations mainly at Oakrulge and Heppner high schools She taught for a year during World War II at the old Hill Militarv Academy on Rocky Butte in Northeast Ponland She also taught at Tigard and Beaverton high schools Apnl R). 1927 she married Austin Smith, who worked at the Heppner “ Timex". The holders of a master's degree in education from Reed College, she was a member ol Delta Gamma Society.
