Vera married Victor Hietmann in 1925 She and her husband farmed north of lone for many years She was a member of the lone United Church of Chrial and ha» nerved at a deaconess for II year» She is also a member of the Hebe kah'* and the Willows Grange She was a charter member of the lone American la-gum Host No 95 Auxi liary and had la-en active in this for 58 years She organized the North lone Irn provrmenl Club in 1930 by inviting ■even nfhoi n ^g M 1*1* women In tier home to start the club which later became the lone Topic Club and organized the lone City Library in 19X1 which it still maintains She has worked 56 years in this organization and was the only remaining active charter member During the years her three child ren were in school, she served on the lone Sc hool Hoard She helped start the lone l*TA and while she was president. the organization started the first school hot lunch program and an auction to finance the pro grain She is survived bv two sons. Colorado Hawk died Monday, Feb 10. 1986 The funeral was held in Denver A native of Fossil, he was born November 27. 1921. the son of Lester and Lennie (En ya rt > llawk lie was one of 13 children On November 8, 1948. he married Myra Chandler They were divorced in June 1961 After serving in the Navy Hawk worked in trucking most of his life lie worked for companies in Denver and also did long haul trucking in many states He retired in September 1985 and moved to Craig, where he raised hog' Surviving are sons Hay of Love- land. Colorado, and Don of I’arker. Colorado, daughter Kda Detnpcy of Brule, Nebraska, four brothers John of Fossil, I’erry of Heppner. Klenor McNamara of Sidney Montana, and Ida Johnson. Isabel Hookout. and Grace Herriman. all of llermiston There are five grandchildren A brother died earlier Dellie Matlock Dellie Wright Matlock. H4. of Fortland. formerly of the Heppner area, died Friday, March 14. I9H6 at a Fortland hospital She was born at Fight Mile near Heppner on D m 38 1981, the daughter of Sylvanus and Lulu (Munkers) Wright Site attended schools in Hardman. Monument and Heppner On Nov I, 1921. she married William Fred Matlock at Heppner The couple operated a dairy south of lone until 1924 when they moved to the Bend area to operate a hay farm In 1927. they returned to la*xington where Mrs Matlock did cooking in cook houses in the harvest fields in 1183 they moved to The Duties where Mrs Matlock worked in Iresli fruit pack at Stadelman Fruit Co and worked in brine cherries for Hudson House and The Dalles Cher ry Growers The couple later moved to Beaver ton where they purchased a shoe repair business Since her husband's death in 1963. Mrs Matlock has made her home in Fortland near two of her four daughters She is survived by daughters. Lulu ( Mrs Lyle) Cole and Betty Mrs George) Wilson of Fortland. Carol i Mrs Hubert Wasson of Zigzag and Juanita Mrs Michael) Ignow ski of The Dalles eight grandchild ren and five great grandchildren A graveside funeral was held in Monument Tuesday. Bd Chmn , Boardman Jack Strege, Boardman v Staff Member l rges support of March 25 sch(x>l levy To the Kditor i have not noticed a level of effort equal to last year being expended to assure passage of the 198*. 87 school budget My fear is that without substantial promotion Morrow C«u nty residents w ill not turn out lor the election That can mean defeat hy default, tiecause it seems every p*-rxon who do«** not support the school budget makes a special effort to vote against it That is not so ol supporters For some reason many persons who support the schools but are not invo|v«-d in the process fail to make the effort to vole on election day unless prodded by active sup porters It behooves us all to know the issues and get behind all of our schools If you have not studied Ihe propos«-d budget, you may b«- inter ested to know that the Morrow County School tax rate p«-r 11,000 of assessed prop«-rty value for 1985 86 was $8 75 Th«- 1986 87 rate is pro posed to lx- $9 66 By way of com pa r ison the lowest rate in Umatilla County for 85 86 was 113 72 and the high<>st was 123 70 Arlington and Condon were 117 31 and »20 97 resp ectively The average for th«- sur rounding area was 117 13 We look pretty good by cost comparison I. for one. am proud of our schools and i>f the persons graduated from them It you are loo, then make the effort to vole for the budget Hemind someone else to v ote loo Remember that one of the greatest gifts we can give the world is educated children net and services We rannoi afford to cut services The levy proposed constitutes a tax rat* of 1« 95 per ( l ooo of assessed property value This is a reduction of 0 32 per 11.000 trom last year This means that the city s Uses will be less overall for 1986*7 than this past year Your budget committee has work ed long and hard to present you with the best possible working budget I urge you to vote "y e t'' on the City of Heppm-r Operating Budget March 25 Your support is greatly ne«-ded Sincerely.
