Safe ’ i cater melon Grist wheel donated to Lexington Return to local markets Following removal from local markets last week, watermelon were expected to arrive at Court Street Central Del s, and Bristow s markets with regular delivery Tuesday The melons have been (exil'd and tagged "s a fe" from pesticide con lamination which prompted the Department of Agriculture and Oregon State Health Division to recall all melons purchased after June 28 Local Hermiston grown melons are expected to be available vain The following July 12 news release received from the state Department of Agriculture outlines the progress of tests mi far Kesults for the first phase of a slate watermelon testing program indicate no pesticide contamination in either vnl or watermelon samples collected in the Hermiston area of Northeast Oregon according to Leonard Kunzman, D irector. Oregon Department of Agriculture “ We have inplemented a compre hensive program of sampling inspection and certification to get a safe supply of watermelon back on the shelf in Oregon grocery stores Farlier this week Oregon I»epart men! of Agriculture field personnel collected five samples of water melon and su soil samples from approximately 455 acres of water melon fields in the Hermiston area Sample test results represent approximately 40 percent of the estimated I.too acres of watermelon produced in the Hermiston area.
