markets last week, watermelon
were expected to arrive at Court
Street Central Del s, and Bristow s
markets with regular delivery

The melons have been (exil'd and
tagged "s a fe" from pesticide con
lamination which prompted the
Department of Agriculture and
Oregon State Health Division to
recall all melons purchased after
June 28
Local Hermiston grown melons
are expected to be available vain
The following July 12 news release
received from the state Department
of Agriculture outlines the progress
of tests mi far
Kesults for the first phase of a
slate watermelon testing program
indicate no pesticide contamination
in either vnl or watermelon samples
collected in the Hermiston area of
Northeast Oregon
according to
Leonard
Kunzman,
D irector.

“ We have inplemented a compre
hensive program of sampling
inspection and certification to get a
safe supply of watermelon back on
the shelf in Oregon grocery stores
Farlier this week Oregon I»epart
men! of Agriculture field personnel
collected five samples of water
melon and su soil samples from
approximately 455 acres of water
melon fields in the Hermiston area
Sample test results represent
approximately 40 percent of the
estimated I.too acres of watermelon
produced in the Hermiston area.

Second and final phase samples
were collected on the remaining
Hermiston w atermelon acreage ami
are currently undergoing laboratory
analysis at the Oregon Department
of Agriculture laboratories in salem
These test results will lie completed
later next week
The vnl and watermelon samples
were tested for pesticide residues as
part of a state certification program
for Oregon grown watermelon
Certification stickers will be applied
to all Oregon grown watermelon
found free of pesticide contami
nation

Before the mill was in operation,

round trip to Walla Walla to have
wheat ground into flour
A newer mill was built in 1914 The
grist wheel from the original mill
was saved from destruction when
the mill was torn down by Virginia
and (¡eorgf Stillman who stored it at
their home umtl their recent

County
Historical Society who in turn gave
it to the city of lexington

July 10 and seated and swore in two
new commissioners, Matt Doherty
of Irngon and William K Sharkey of
Boardman
They replace Haul
