Oklahoma. Vicki Steagall Hynd i the daughter of Anna Mae and George! was gaining some fame as a model For sometime pretty Vicki has been managing Peppe's Italian Restaurant in downtown Tulsa She was recently recruited to make a TV commercial which is being shown 6 to 8 times each day showing her modeling clothing for the Tempo Shops Well, what's to be the future of Heppner's garbage is causing some head scratching, however, new city planning commission members. Nancy lainkford. Bill Cox and Mark Tullis should help out A helpful beautification project by the Lions Club will see those badly worn fire station doors being repainted soon The matter of waste disposal has surely become an almost overwhelming problem ranging from the international debates over nuclear waste to the significant matter of Heppner's garbage which is distressing the city and county It is most pleasing to note that the histone county courthouse is now officially entered in the National Register of Historic Places which is maintained by the National Park Service and the U S Department of Interior under authority of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1968 School students have been contributing good works to their communities In Heppner's Flementary School they created excitement with the new four part mural "A Celebration of Motion " At lone students have learned so much lately about how previous generations lived There a most attractive welcome sign was created with the backing from the Agri Business Organization Viva Villanova ’ Monday night the two top Big Fast Basketball Conference teams really put on a tremendous show as the underdog Villanova W ildcats overcame the strong Georgetown Hoyas 66 to 64 Georgetown led 20 to 14 at one time, the W ildcats had a one point lead at halftime and their amazing 78 per cent field goal shooting (the best ever in a NCAA finals' brought them the national title and their center Pinckney won most valuable player over (»eorgetowns super center Fwing Last year I did a little reading about Georgetown University of Washington. D C and now I’ve learned a bit about Villanova University of Villanova. Pennsylvania ia suburb of Philadelphia > Both are coed, both are Roman Catholic Universities Georgetown's founding date is 1789 and Villanova began in 1842 Their basketball coaches, big. black John Thompson and relatively small, smiling. Italian Rollie Massimino have really fathered remarkable teams Last week our teachers and students enjoyed their spring vacations Now after this break all concerned will have returned to their classrooms last Monday. April 1, ready to have a little foolishness for a small part of the day and then to re settle into the serious business of growing and learning during the last two months of their school year This week. Holy Week, will find many families attending traditional pre Faster services in all churches These historic religious commemora (ions will climax next Sunday. April 7, as the Christian world celebrates the day of re birth at joyful Easter services It is hoped that the Heppner area is going to receive a wonderful community Faster gift “by Good Friday if possible'' according to I^rry Cerullo who is working with the Boy Scouts toward the replacement of the Fast Hill's old rugged cross This project really got underway last fall when Perry Cooper was here leading the scouts Linda Shaw and other scout leading adults and all the scouts have been eagerly looking forward to the realization of the project as have many citizens who have been so hopeful that the old cross would be at least repainted In recent weeks a new cross has been put together and painted in the Glenn Cooper trucking company shop Of course, adverse weather has prevented any installation during the last several months Now on these warm days of Holy Week it is hoped that the new cross will be replacing the weatherworn, rugged old one which sits on the magnificent viewpoint east of town on the high spot of Don and Merlyn Robinson's land We understand that Perry Cooper is coming home from Texas this week and may attend the installation of the new cross As Anna Mae Steagall declared recently, and as most of us know, the viewpoint and the cross are more visible to more people now from the re located Willow Creek road than they were formerly For several Faster Sunday's several of us have made our annual treks to this lovely spot We bless the scouts and all who have given time, labor, materials, money and encouragement toward this great project Do have a wonderful, joyful Faster Sunday Wilson — Robinson \tt Methodist church A traditional Maundy Thursday evening will be held at the Heppner United Methodist Church tomorrow evening April 4 The service will tiegin with the viewing of a special film at 6 p m in the church sanctuary After the film folks will move downstairs to the dining area to partake of a simple pre Faster meal together The women of the church have planntd an eventful evening pro gram to follow the 6 3«) salad buffet supper on April 111, to which they have invited all the church women of the south M irrow area I-iurie Hire, Heppner's United Mothixlist Womens president, will welcome everyone that evening, special music will be provided, including instrumental numbers by Kathlix-n Brazell and a vocal sectio n by the Rev Susan West Many women are eagerly looking forward to meeting the speaker of the evening, Rev Kate Tomera. the pastor of the I’endleton United Methodist Church who presents her weekly sermons over the radio .............. .....
