March 1985 did sort of come in like a lion and leav e like a lamb tx-ginning
with snow but warming at its end The month saw some top activities here as
its first days were filled with the escitement of the state basketball
tournament in Pendleton where the Heppner High Fillies thrilled everyone
with their fine play and outstanding sportsmanship
The month's middle saw the biggest and best St Patrick s Day celebration
ever in Heppner thanks to many folks, especially Jimmy Farley whose
inspirational work led into the revival of Irish glory and to that lovely old sun
that rolled around heaven that Saturday and Sunday
1-ast Saturday, on March's 30th night, the whole county should be thrilled
at having the 1985 Fair and Rodeo Court installed at an outstanding
ceremony Queen Hndgett and her four princesses and their five pennant
bearers made a delightful appearance, and we feel they will lead many
home folks and friends from surrounding areas to come to enjoy the August
fair and rodeo
Between these three top events many somewhat lesser activities took
place Back in Tulsa. Oklahoma. Vicki Steagall Hynd i the daughter of Anna
Mae and George! was gaining some fame as a model For sometime pretty
Vicki has been managing Peppe's Italian Restaurant in downtown Tulsa
She was recently recruited to make a TV commercial which is being shown 6
to 8 times each day showing her modeling clothing for the Tempo Shops
Well, what's to be the future of Heppner's garbage is causing some head
scratching, however, new city planning commission members. Nancy
lainkford. Bill Cox and Mark Tullis should help out A helpful beautification
project by the Lions Club will see those badly worn fire station doors being
repainted soon
The matter of waste disposal has surely become an almost overwhelming
problem ranging from the international debates over nuclear waste to the
significant matter of Heppner's garbage which is distressing the city and
county
It is most pleasing to note that the histone county courthouse is now
officially entered in the National Register of Historic Places which is
maintained by the National Park Service and the U S Department of
Interior under authority of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1968
School students have been contributing good works to their communities
In Heppner's Flementary School they created excitement with the new
four part mural "A Celebration of Motion " At lone students have learned so
much lately about how previous generations lived There a most attractive
welcome sign was created with the backing from the Agri Business
Organization
Viva Villanova ’ Monday night the two top Big Fast Basketball Conference
teams really put on a tremendous show as the underdog Villanova W ildcats
overcame the strong Georgetown Hoyas 66 to 64 Georgetown led 20 to 14 at
one time, the W ildcats had a one point lead at halftime and their amazing 78
per cent field goal shooting (the best ever in a NCAA finals' brought them
the national title and their center Pinckney won most valuable player over
(»eorgetowns super center Fwing
Last year I did a little reading about Georgetown University of
Washington. D C and now I’ve learned a bit about Villanova University of
Villanova. Pennsylvania ia suburb of Philadelphia > Both are coed, both are
Roman Catholic Universities Georgetown's founding date is 1789 and
Villanova began in 1842 Their basketball coaches, big. black John
Thompson and relatively small, smiling. Italian Rollie Massimino have
really fathered remarkable teams
Last week our teachers and students enjoyed their spring vacations Now
after this break all concerned will have returned to their classrooms last
Monday. April 1, ready to have a little foolishness for a small part of the day
and then to re settle into the serious business of growing and learning during
the last two months of their school year
This week. Holy Week, will find many families attending traditional
pre Faster services in all churches These historic religious commemora
(ions will climax next Sunday. April 7, as the Christian world celebrates the
day of re birth at joyful Easter services
It is hoped that the Heppner area is going to receive a wonderful
community Faster gift “by Good Friday if possible'' according to I^rry
Cerullo who is working with the Boy Scouts toward the replacement of the
Fast Hill's old rugged cross This project really got underway last fall when
Perry Cooper was here leading the scouts Linda Shaw and other
scout leading adults and all the scouts have been eagerly looking forward to
the realization of the project as have many citizens who have been so hopeful
that the old cross would be at least repainted
In recent weeks a new cross has been put together and painted in the Glenn
Cooper trucking company shop Of course, adverse weather has prevented
any installation during the last several months Now on these warm days of
Holy Week it is hoped that the new cross will be replacing the weatherworn,
rugged old one which sits on the magnificent viewpoint east of town on the
high spot of Don and Merlyn Robinson's land We understand that Perry
Cooper is coming home from Texas this week and may attend the
installation of the new cross
As Anna Mae Steagall declared recently, and as most of us know, the
viewpoint and the cross are more visible to more people now from the
re located Willow Creek road than they were formerly For several Faster
Sunday's several of us have made our annual treks to this lovely spot
We bless the scouts and all who have given time, labor, materials, money
and encouragement toward this great project
Do have a wonderful, joyful Faster Sunday
