Ih« llrpiMirr («iiirtlr lim rs VjWrMSÛ O New laws may allow more services New DMV laws may help police Oregon drivers who are able to get occupational permits after their driver licenses have been suspended willnow have more trouble violating the occupational limits without get ting caught Tony DeLorenzo. assistant admin istrator of the Motor Vehicles D ivi sion'a Driver Services Branch, says in a recent DM V news release that the possibility of getting caught has increased because of one little known part of the state's new get tough legislation that took effect July I That section of the law allows DMV to provide police agencies with information about occupational per mils issued to people in their com munities To date. 13 city police departments and Oregon State Po lice offices in 32 cities have asked to get the once a month listing of occu pational permits issued to drivers in their cities The listing. DeUirenzo says, in cludes the driver s name, address, driver license number, and the exact routes, times of day and days of week a driver has been authorized to drive in order to keep a job D rivin g ourside those lim its means the driver may be cited by police for driving while suspended and DMV will take away the occupa tional permit through a specific record check for individual drivers but they had no way to know in advance the drivers issued occupa tional permits in their communities DM V received complaints from police and other safety groups that people with occupational permits often continued to drive on an almost unlimited basis because police did not know without a specific record check who in their area had been issued occupational permits Notrmber 21. IIM SK \ KN l CALL: 676-9 2 2 8 (O O O O O O O C X to low income families L aw income families in Oregon who have not qualified for welfare or medical help may benefit from new laws that took effect October I says a news release from the OreKon Dept of Human Resources New federal laws will change some ser vices provided to low incomr (ami Ilea under Aid to Dependent t'hildren 1 A IK ’ r and Medicaid programs, which are funded jointly by federal and state governments The ( iregon Adult and Family Services Division AFS) expects about 2.400 more people to qualify this year for medical assistance, cash, or both In addition, some current welfare recipients will have increased benefits or wil get help with day care payments and medi cal coverage when they go off welfare Medical Assistance Pregnant women and children in two parent families may be eligible for medical coverage While the families won t receive cash grants, welfare pay ment standards are used as guide lines in determining eligibility for medical assistance Medically Needy Families may qualify for medical aid if their income is no more than one third higher than the maximum amount they could receive on ADC they may still qualify with more income if high medical hills reduce their income For example, the maxi mum grant for three people is *.168 a month Under the Medically Needy program, they could qualify at *490 a month income <*368 times 133 3 percent i or at a higher income if medical bills reduced their income to Wsti The program only served single parent families previously Worth Two parent families with income low enough to lie equivalent to welfare standards receive aid under this program While the previous program provided medical coverage for children, the expanded program includes pregnant women Benefit and Eligibility Changes Eligibility for the ADC program and grant amounts are based on family- size and income, with a maximum grant for each size family Families with "earned income" from wages or salaries are allowed certain deductions in figuring net income Net income reduces the family's AIM' grant Fligibility and grant amounts are recalculated monthly The new laws allow families re ceiving ADC to remain eligible with more income than before, some families will also receive larger AIK' grants I Part time workers will be allowed a $75 work expense deduction Previously only full time workers were allowed the full deduc tion F.arnings of children under 19 who are full time students will no longer affect the family's eligibility Thirty dollars a month in earn ings won't be counted against the family grant for 12 months Pre viously, the *3o month allowance could only be used for a four month period Families receiving child support pay ments will not have the first *50 each month counted as part of their income Benefits for people going off wel fare People who lose AIM' grants because of employment but who still need medical coverage will be avail able for people going off AIM' because they no longer qualified for deductions that reduced their in / r Æ llrpjm rr.
