Heppner Oregon To be held Oct. 13th Vi hat s Your Opinion Around About Plans underway for Heppner Centennial By Justine W eatherford Many y e a n I h jn ra llen d rd al least one county (air. this year I will have attended three Umatilla Morrow s and Gilliam a. and also seen the Oregon State Fair for the first time in quite a few year* Each fair has similarities yet each is different Because I put personal effort into the Morrow County Fair it. of course, means the most to me However, I've enjoyed comparing aspects of each of these people-based shows Um atilla's fair in Hermiston ran from Aug 4 through Aug 12 It had a large sired carnival The events began with a two-day horseshow The open class and 4 H and EFA divisions were rather like Morrow s. but larger There was a good assortment of commercial booths the two of th-se I enjoyed moat were a nursery display and the showing of a super mobile home Jane Kawlins and I spent most of our time in the Floriculture Department where we found air conditioning spaciousness and a fine showing of specimens and of artistic designs 1’ersons whose names began with letters A K entered their flowers through Wednesday, and on Thursday the L-Z persons brought their entries Some of the evening events included professional wrestling, the old time fiddlers, a horse pulling contest, a magic show a variety stage show and the weekend rodeo The fair s daytime events culminated with a street parade on Saturday On Sunday . Aug 12. the 4 >1 horseshow preceded the opening of Morrow Fair and Kodeo Week which ran through Aug IV with the open class horseshow follow mg on Sat . Aug 25 It was disappointing to many younger fair patrons to find that the promised carnival did not develop this year. but the increased number of commercial booths somewhat filled the void Many persons worked diligently preparing for the fair, especially members of the three south county garden clubs The evening events here included the public fashion revue on Monday. Family Fun Night un Tuesday, which had been set as the first Boardman Im gon Dav the annual 4 H and FFA market stock sale on Wed night the Friday night Morrow County Kodeo, and then the fine, long street parade Saturday followed by the afternuon and Sunday afternoon WHA NBA IKA Kodeo programs During the fair days there were demonstrations and fun contests This year's fair committee decoratrd the buildings and grounds with many blooming flowers which brightened the whole show considerably. It was most disappointing to read that only 764 persons paid attendance to the fair and that must have included the 255 who were checked in for the family fun night It is hard to understand why attendance is so poor here Excuses were harvest time,' 'no carmcal." etc and although these alibis are valid, it is hard to understand why county citizens don't support the efforts of their rodeo board and fair committee w ith much better attendance The opportunity to go to the State Fair with Jane Kawlins was a sudden, pleasing surprise We were txilh especially interested in the wonderful flower and garden show with its spectacular blooming wall, although we pretty well sow all parts of thr fair during our two day time visits We found the county exhibits very different and were pleased thut Morrow s was given the most central position just inside thr south doors of the huge Jackman laing Building The first day we located every thing, then the next day we s[>ent more time in the areas we most enjoyed such as the art and photography department, the Tom McCall Garden, the restored Wasco County School displayed by the State I)ept of Education the wonderful Crafts Courtyard and the table setting rake decorating, hobby and collections sections We w ere not very thrilled w ith the food we we happened to select in the Food Fair Division, and we did not attend any of the evening events, as we drove on to Corvallis for overnight visiting in family homes This week I hope others from Morrow will also be attending the Gilliam County F air w hich opened with its rodeo ev ents over Sunday and Labor Day where I hear, several Morrow County cowboys scored well At Condon the fair is usually set following the Stale Fair It tvegan Sept 5 and will end on Sunday Sept V As there is alway s a street parade on July 4th, there is not a parade at (airtime, but the grand marshal or marshals (often a married couple i lead the grand entry into the arena before the rodeo and also arrange a family booth at the fair Garden club members throughout northeastern Oregon are so pleased with the efforts of the new club at Condon and are sure club members there will have a fine influence on the fair (Jueen Tracy Eakin. who also reigned at the Arlington Kodeo and at the Fourth of July celebration and rodeo, does not have any princesses Unfortunately m .*f of the fairs this year, including the State Fair have seen drops in attendance It was announced that only 720.0U0 attended the Salem show which ended on l-abor Day that was dow n over to.uii from the hoped for attendance f’ erhaps the higher costs made a difference most (»■rsons paid $2 each day to park tlieir cars and then admission and the costly food and carniv al and other special events added more than many families wanted to spend just before the tieginning of a new school year With fall come the opportunities for many civic and social activities It seems so unnecessary for any one to feel lonely in our community as there are groups here for persons of every age Any women whoenjoy making friendships and learning craft skills should stop at the Neighborhood Center's Thursday Afternoon Group Seniors are invited to enjoy a noon meal and socialbility at the fairgrounds each Wed noon a great selection of churches welcome newcomers and returnees a fine variety of lodges and civic cluh* and committees is available here Just ask your friendly neighbors or the helpful clerks in the stores to point you toward someone who ran give you precis«' information about any activity you may be interested in pursuing this winter Thursday .
