Sanford is a former High Schxl State Finals Bullfight er, a four-time Region IX College Finals Bullfighter, a four time NKA Finals Clown Bullfighter Champion, and the first choice by any rodeo committee who knows bull fighters In addition to being the North American Bullfighting Champion, the substitute sec ondary teacher and High School Wrestling Coach has claimed many other titles. In 1977 he was the Region IX Bareback Riding Champion, and the 1978 National Asso ciation of Intercollegiate Ath letics 150 lb. Wrestling Cham pion while attending Central Washington University. He also holds bachelors degrees in Speech Communications and Physical Education. To earn his national bull fighting title, Sanford first had to earn a berth in the Coors North American Finals Ro deo. The eliminations finally led to four athletes being selected for the Finals, one from Canada, one from Aus tralia, and another from North Carolina, and Joe. One of the high lights of Sanford's bullfighting is jump ing over a bull as he charges 676-9108 Inc. BIGELOW at him. "We really got a - lot of local support from both Boardman and Heppner," stated Eagles President, Jack Wetzel. Heppner man to participate in Unknown Soldier ceremony Major Chris Brown, U.S. Army, has been selected to attend and be a part of cere mony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetery, where a Veteran of the Vietnam War will be entombed among the "Unknown Soldiers who ser ved in World War I and II." Major Brown will accom pany the Mayor of Washington D C. to the Memorial Day Co. The annual Morrow County Schools Spelling Contest was held at Riverside High on Tuesday, May 15, 1984. Contest coordinators John Edmundson and Kathryn Dean have announced stellar spellers in the three divisions as follows: Division I Elementary to Grade 6 first-Kelly Spray, Board man; second-Brian Doherty, lone; and third -Cissy Sanchez, Irrigon. Watne named 4 84 Lions president The Heppner Lions Club installed new officers for 1984 during iU annual Charter Night Celebration held at the American Legion Hall Friday, May 18 in Heppner. Elected as president for the coming year was Lonnie Watne, a loan officer at Bank of Eastern Oregon. Watne was also named Lion of the year for his work and efforts during 1983. Bob Kahl was named first vice president for 1984, and Don Shelton was named second vice president. Other officers are: John Edmundson, third vice president; Bill Kuhn, secretary; Dave Tharp, treasurer; Don Cole, tail twister; Dick Sargent, lion tamer. Board of directors are: Larry Mills, Terry Hughes, Bill Helphinstine and Cliff Green. This year's charted night marked the 10th anniversary of the Heppner Club's founding. Charter member Cliff Green was speaker for the evening's dinner and meeting. Green spoke on the club's past accomplishments and urged members to "get involved with their community." Incoming president Lonnie Watne said he would woek hard in the comming year, and told Lion's Club members to expect his calling on them to help out in 19B4. kids when he and his wife Linda became parents of their first child a son Cody Joseph born January 13, 1984. Coming to Spray with Joe will be his assistant Tim King from Tacoma, Wash. Local news Jeanne Dabbs, formerly of Hcppncr but now living in Maui, Hawaii, will be visiting here next Monday, May 28. Everyone who would enjoy seeing Jeanne is invited to drop by the home of Jan Stroeber, at 960 E. Fairview way, between 1:30 and 4 p.m. that day for coffee and visiting. The V.F.W. Auxiliary will be having a benefit food sale for Dick Flaiz Friday, May 25 at 9 a.m. in front of Central Market. A spokesperson pre dicts "lots of goodies for sale." Lions receive 600 The Heppner Lions Club received a check at their charter banquet last Friday. The $600 was from the Rolling Hills Run which they co-sponsored with the Morrow County Education Association. The money will go toward the Lions-sponsored solar heating project at the Heppner swim ming pool. Ceremony and serve as his honorary military escort. The first place winners in each division received an a- Healy takes 2nd all-around Maureen Healy of Heppner took the second all-around girl award in competition with the Eastern Oregon State College Hodeo Club last weekend, re ported a news release from K.OS.C. Lori Huark captured the first all-around title, chalking up 195 points. Healy followed close behind with 185. Healy won the breakaway, placed third in barrels and finished fourth in goats. By adding 185 points from this competition to her year's to tal, Healy now ranks second in the nation. She follows first place girl, Rosalind Miller from Merced College in Calif HURRY! Bingham is among the members of the Flaiz benefits raise over $1,000 Over $1,000 has been raised in the past two weeks to benefit Dick Flaiz, 35, of Hep pner, who was the victim of a stroke March 28. A fund raiser at the Heppner Elks Club Saturday May 12 netted $260 to be donated toward the cost of Flaiz's medical bills.
