Most of us could go on vaction for another month and not miss anything in the winding road of the playoffs in basketball and hockey. The NBA could very well stretch into mid-June, while the Stanley Cup playoffs could nudge into the late stages of May. (For those who wonder why hockey has never caught on in most parts of the country, we need only to consider the challenge of keeping the rink frozen in Phoenix at this time of year.) In the NBA playoffs, there have been a few "surprises." New Jersey 's success against Philadelphia has to raise a few eyebrows, wven if the 76ers do seem far less impressive than last year. At this writing. Phoenix leads the Blazers 2-1, which over the course of the season would seem to be an upset. Realistically, however, the Suns came into the playoffs on 9 roll, while the Blazers were on their worst streak of the season. A major explanation for the much ballyhooed fact that nobody has repeated as NBA champ in 15 years is that momentum is everything these days. Too many factors need to be there for a title-winning run, especially when one considers that a team may now have to play as many as 26 games in the playoffs alone. In the Stanley Cup matchups, it will be Montreal vs. The Islanders and Edmonton vs. Minnesota. Only Montreal can be termed a surprise team, but the difficulty that the Gretzky-led Oilers experienced reaching the semis is a major upset. Edmonton had beaten Calgary 8 times out of 8 in the regular season, but needed all 7 to win the quarterfinals. The Islanders needed an overtime victory in the first round, or they would have been out at the hands of the Rangers. Look for the Isles streak to stop at four cups, and look for Edmonton to do it to them. For those of you who follow tennis, Sunday's match between Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert-Lloyd had to be an eye-opener. We all knew that they were the two best; we all knew that Navratilova had been getting the best of the matchups (9 straight wins); but nobody could forsee the pasting that Evert-Lloyd took on clay. Keep in mind that her lifetime pro record on clay was 221-4, and that she hadn't lost in a few years. Navratilova blasted her by the count of 6-2, 6-0. That score is roughly similar to spotting Jack Nicklaus three a side in the U.S. Open, or giving Carl Lewis a ten-yard headstart in the 100 meters. It just isn't supposed to happen. It will be quite a while before anybody even suggests that the Czech-turned-Yankee netter is anything but the absolute best in her sport. It was nice to see Ben Crenshaw with the Masters golf tournament. Forget the talk about him putting pressure on himself to win the big ones-he just seems like a nice guy who didn't finish last, for once. David Palmer's five-inning perfect game is one of those breaks that go the right way, sometimes. In the history of bast bill, there have been 16 official perfect games. This is one of them, and will be duly recorded at the Hall of Fame. I wonder how many games have had five perfect innings and then gone down the pipe? About the same number as bowlers who got the first five or six strikes, but didn't come up with a rain delay. If I can get a second-frame rain delay, 111 be in business. Thought for the day : How warped are the people who are writing the vicious letters to the 'Oregonian' and blaming the newspaper for (a) the NCAA investigation and (b) the fact that U of 0 signed several top basketball prospects. I'm waiting for them to figure out a way to blame the OSU football program on the 'Oregonian'. Anybody who can pull that off should apply for a job to help balance the federal budget. Leading the boys was Craig Hams with 24 points. He won the long jump at 20" 6", finished third in the triple jump (40' 31"), and fourth in both the 100 and 200 meters in times of :12.0 and :24.7 re spectively. For the girls, Deena Hams was third in the javelin, with a new school record of 122' 8". She tossed the discus 82' 34" for sixth. In the discus. Randy Mc Cabe was first with a toss of 126' 7". He pole vaulted ten feet for second and high jump ed six feet for fifth. Adding a second in the shot put, Donnie Doherty heaved 44' 84". Mike Douglas collected a second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10.03.0, and ran 4:32.0 for 1,500 meters. Hurdlers Chris Rea and Brain Douglas were second and third in the highs with times of : 18.9 and :19.4 re spectively. The intermediated saw Douglas run :47.5 (fourth) and Rea clock :49.1 (fifth). They were on the fifth place 1,600 meter relay team of Eric Cook and Jerry Anderson w ho ran 4:10.5. The same four ran :52.4 for the 400 meter relay. Thrower Scott Barnett was sixth in the discus at 104' 10". He tossed the javelin 128' 11". Middle distance runner Jerry Anderson clocked :59.0 in the 400 and 2:23.7 in the 800 meter. Jumpers Candi Rudisill high jumped 4' 4" and long jumped 13' 2 ". Rod Taylor and Howard Leavitt put the shot 32' 5" and 32' 3" respectively. Leavitt also threw 82' 0" in the discus, photo by WoyTW Harm and Taylor threw the javelin 85" 0". Ashley Conklin long jumped 14' 11" and triple jumped 33" 64". He also ran :28 7 in the 200. In straight sets Patty Mc Elligott defeated Shelly Ed gerly 6-3, 6-1. Also in girls singles Paula Anderson won 6- 7, 7-5, 6-3 over Alma Chavez. Anderson and Sandi Wright were victorious against Shir Ian Baily and Sally Alexander 7- 6, 2-6, 6-3. McElligott and Kim McCabe were beaten 0-6, 3-6 by Chavez and Julie Tracy. Boys singles action saw Mark Meyers defeated 3-6, 6-1, 4 by Carlos Chavez. Eric Pointer lost to Alda Montes 3-6, 6-3, 2-6. Mike Rietmann and Ignacio Garzon fell 2-6, 4-6 to Chavez and Montes. The girls were fifth with 21 x)ints. Craig Ham set a new school record winning the triple jump with a leap of 41' 1". He also won the long jump at 20' 2'", and ran third in the 100 meters (.11.9) and the 200 meters C24.3). Another double winner was Randy McCabe. He won the high jump at 5' 10" and the discuss at 114' 's". Shot putter Donnie Doherty tossed 42' 8" for first. Mark Meyers beat Larry Carroll 6-0, 6-1 in boys singles. Also in boys singles, Eric Pointer lost 2 6, 3-6. to Ktm Rodgers. The boys doubles team of Meyers and Pointer won 8-1 over Scott Dona von and Erick Frederickson. Ione's other boys doubles team of Mike Rietmann and Ignacio Garzon won 4 6. 64. 6-4 over Tom Meade and Dwight Osborne. Ione's only girl winner v. as Patty McElligott who beat Kami Waelty 8 4. Paula An derson lost 4 6, 46 against Dawn Tininis. Jerry Anderson clocked 2: 1S.8 for 800 meters finishing second. He ran the S.000 meters, placing sixth at 10:51.5, Thrower Scott Barnett put the shot 33' 11" and hurled the discus 102' 2'V for third and heaved the javelin. Hod Taylor also put the shot and tossed the Javelin. Ashley Conklin long and tripl Jumped 15" 3" and 34' 3" respectively, plus running the 200 in :28.6.
