Season s Season's "bests" highlight ed track porformances for the Heppner High School track sters last Saturday at the Grant Union Invitational (rack meet at John Day. "The competition was tough," said head coach Dale Conklin. "The kids responded by putting together outstand ing efforts." The results were not in favor of the young golf team, but the experience will help them in future play. Vikings bomb Mustangs 11-0 By TRAVIS HYATT The Heppner Mustangs gave it all they had in the first game of there double-header losing to first place Weston McEwen 11-7 Saturday at Heppner. Heppner took a two nothing lead in the first inning thanks to a couple of bases loaded walks to Troy Hyatt and Lor an Hayes by TigerScot pitcher Kick Scheibner. But Weston scored three times in the top of the second thanks to a single and two doubles. Weston extended it's lead 5-2 in the third. Heppner tied it up in the fourth on RBI singles by Ron Doherty, Tom Hammon, and Jim McConnell. Weston regained the lead in the fifth on a single by Tom Meier. Thanks to three errors by the Mustangs in the sixth, Weston scored three more runs. Heppner added two more in the seventh but it wasn't enough to upset the seventh ranked TigerScots. "We hit the ball well but made too many mistakes in the first game; it's nice to start scoring some runs though." said Coach Mike Koyer. The Mustangs hitting woes showed up again in the second game collecting only four hits and scoring one run losing 1 1-1 to lower the record to 1-5. J Vv GALLON I IREG. "I'm not making any excus es for our loss to Sherman County," said head coach "We're still not hitting the ball like we should and we're also making too many mis takes. Janelle McElhany equalled her per sonal best in the 100 meter hurdles with a 17.5 effort. John Martin had a season's best triple jump of 40.5 and the 400 relay team of Archie Lucas, Rod Cole, Kennedy and Moyer recorded their best of the season with a 47.8 clock ing. Fun Run planned for Irrigon Irrigon Park Marina is the beginning point of Irrigon 's first road run, the Stokes Landing Fun Run, announced Susan McNerney, a spokes person for the event. The run will begin at 9 a.m. June 17. Three courses will be offered, 6.2, 3.1 and one mile. Walkers are also encouraged to join the run. Registration will be accept ed up until the day of the race at $8 with a T-shirt, $3 without. Prizes will be awarded to the first male and first female finishers. All other prizes will be by random drawing after the race. The Wasco County-Wahtonka Invitational is slated to begin at 4 p.m. with field events. Running events will start later with many events to be run under the lights. The following weekend is the Columbia Basin Con ference championships also slated for The Dalles with the District 7-A meet to be held May 11-12 at Umatilla.
