I am a "new comer" to Heppner with two small chil dren. My heart reaches out to you Fay that after 26 years you're still haunted by this experience. As the years pass you continue to fear for the Commends job; disputes issue To the editor: In thinking about the issue of the fencing of Willow Creek and my letter of last week one more thought occurs to me. While I seriously disagree with the lack of action by you, the council on this issue, I think we have to thank you for doing the job of council mem bers when few people are Makes sense To the editor: Hutch took a little heat from me last week because of an advertisement that he ran without identification. In a phone conversation, he said that a Heppner person paid for that ad. When I asked who, Hutch didn't remember. Voters' pamphlets mailed Oregon's official Primary Election Voters' Pamphlet-all 1,240,000 copies-have been mailed to every household in the state, according to Norma Paulus, Secretary of State. Oregon law requires that the pamphlets be delivered by May 1, two weeks in advance of the actual election date, May 15, 1984. The Secretary of State is responsible for the compila tion and distribution of the 25 separate pamplets, some of Ida Coleman celebrates 80th Over 120 friends and rela tives came by the Fair Annex Building on Saturday after noon, April 14 to celebrate Ida Coleman's 80th birthday. Engagements Jones Williams Michael Jones and Robin W illiams David and Barbara Williams, Baker, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Robin, to Michael S. Jones. Michael, the son of Bob and Sue Jones, Heppner, is a 1980 Heppner High School graduate. He is attending Eastern Oregon State College at LaGrande where he is ajunior majoring in agri-business. Robin, also a junior majoring in agri-business at EOSC, is a 1981 graduate of Baker High School. The couple plans a June 30 wedding at the Baker First Church of the Nazarene. Couple celebrates 50th Dick and Lorena Borman Dick and Lorena Borman, formerly of Heppner, will be celebrating their 50th anniversary Saturday, May 5, 1984 from 1-4 p.m. at the Broadway Christian Church, 115 South Fifth Avenue, Yakima, Washington. Their children and grandchildren encourage all of their Heppner -area friends to attend the reception. Sifting through the Times 50 Years Ago Thursday, April 26, 1936 A front page story indicates that voter registration has dropped by 2GG fur tlie coming primary election. With only one local race, that between Republican Leon W. Briggs and Kenneth Ovlatt for trea surer, the Gazette indicates that most concerned was with a proposed sales tax and both the Republican and Deom cratic tickets for the gover nor's race. Intermittent rain showers, .28" of rain at Heppner, was expected to improve the crop outlook in south Morrow County. 25 Years Ago Thursday, April 23, 1959 The Morrow County School Budget was approved by the Morrow Co. School Board and published with a savings of $26,400 from the budget which was originally proposed to the board. The Navy reportedly called a halt to further use of the Bombing Range near Board man until "misses" of the 144 square mile bomb target could be corrected. The two misses were unintentional and within a six week period. Dropped in the lone cemetery and a resident's yard were 25 lb. practice missies which emitt ed a smoke tracer. James Barnett was elected fire chief of the newly formed 5 W J V r 7 fire department for the city of lone. Assistants in the depart ment were Robert DeSpain, Robert Drake. Eldor, Tucker and Ernest McCabe. Donald Eristow was named secretary treasurer. It was reiwrted that "all communites in the county participated in last Friday's Civilian Defense 'Operation Alert' in cooperation with the rest of the state and the nation as a test of emergency plann ing." 10 Years Ago Thursday, April 25, 1974 City Engineer Steve Ander son and Orville Cutsforth were in Washington D. C. April 25 to testify in behalf of the Willow Creek Dam Project before the House Appropriations Sub committee and to confer with Congressman Al L'llman and Senators Mark Hatfield and Bob Packwood. Kirk Baker, Oregon State Park Division, explained to the Heppner Comon Council the requirements which the city would have to meet in order to get matching funds for the development of the donated land which is now Hager Park. Sheriff's Report The Morrow County Sher iff's Department at the Mor row County Courthouse in Heppner handled the following calls, cases and reports during the past week : On April 14, Shelley Renee Goben, 22 Heppner, was cited for two counts of allegedly Furnishing Alcohol to Minors. On April 19. at 12:45a.m., an ambulance was requested at a Boardman residence. A fe male with an injury was transported to Good Shepherd Hospital in Hermiston. On April 20, at 3:15 p.m. the Morrow County Sheriff's Department arrested Scott Michael Mayhead, 33, Board man, on a charge of Assault IV, Mayhead was lodged at the Umatilla Police Depart ment. Also on April 20, at 10:58 p.m, the Morrow County Sheriff's Department charged Gary Allen Root, 21, Irrigon, and John Samuel Williams, 20, Irrigon, with alleged Theft of gasoline from a U.S. Fish and Wildlife vehicle. On April 21, Richard Snider reported possible criminal mischief to a D-8 cat belonging to Humbert Excavating, Wes ton. A fuel cap was removed which necessitated that the remaining diesel be drained and tested for contaminants. Damage was estimated at $210. On April 22, the Morrow County Sheriff's Offfice ar rested Arnulfo Rodiguez Ponce, 32, Boardman. on charges of Assault IV and menacing. Ponce was lodged at the Umatilla Police Department. Marriage Licenses Marriage license applications were accepted at the Morrow County Clerk's Office at the Morrow County Courthouse in Heppner from: Kenneth Allen Combs, 20 and Barbara Jean Hill, 23, both of Sacramento, California. 100-year farms sought The Morrow County Histor ical Society so far has a list of 10 farms that qualify for the 100-year farm awards. Pre sentation of these awards will be at the Pioneer Picnic held at the Morrow County fair grounds on Memorial Day weekend.
