I14 lone boys earn 101 at Condon Invitational Heppner girls bring home 1st place By ASHLEY CONKLIN At the Condon Invitational on Saturday, April 7 the lone boys trace team won the team title with 101 points. Heppner won the girls competition with 113 points. Sherman County of Moro finished second in both the boys and girls races Ione's girls finished with two points. Craig -lams was runner-up to Riverside's Tyler Trumbull for the boys high point trophy with 34 points. He won the long and triple jumps at 20' j" and 40' 5" respectively. He was second in the 200 meters :24.9) and third in the 100 (:12.1). Another fine performance was turned in by Randy Mc Cabe. He won the high jump at 6' 2", wn the pole vault at ten feet, wai wcond in the discus at 113' 9' nd was on the 400 meter reL team with Eric Cook. Chris Rea, and Brian Douglas whi finished fifth in :51.0. Gaining a se nd in the shot put, Donnie Dol -ty broke the school record wi, a toss of 45' I-". Distance runner Mike Doug las won the 3.000 meters in a 10:12.7 time. In the 1500 me ters he was second in 4:36.7. He clocked 1:02.5 for 400 me ters. Brian Douglas was fifth in both hurdle races. He ran the highs in :19.7 and the in termediates in :47.8. He sprinted : 12.8 in the 100. The girls two points came from Deena Hams who tossed the javelin 101' 2" for fifth. She also hurled the discus 82' 7". Chris Rea was third in the high hurdles at :19.1. High jumping 5' 2" and running the intermediate hurdles : 50. 1.0. Thrower Scott Barnett was sixth in the discus at 105' 114". He hurled 121' 6" in the javelin. Eric Cook ran 1:03.00 and 2:30.4 for 400 and 800 meters respectively. Candi Rudisill high jumped 4' 4" and long jumped 12' 11". Another thrower. Rod Tay lor put the shot 33' 5 V, and he also tossed the javelin. Runner Jerry Anderson showed times of 2:27.3 in the 800 meters and 10:46.0 in the Ione's boy meet at Boardman By ASHLEY CONKLIN On Tuesday, April 3 the lone boys thinclads scored 130 points to win a six way track meet at Boardman. The girls team finished sixth with 30 points. Craig Hams won the 100 yard dash in :11.1. He triple jumped 38' 9l" for first, threw the javelin 134' 8" plac ing fourth and long jumped 19' 2", for second place. High jumping 5' 10" and pole vaulting 9' 6", Randy McCabe was first in both events. He hurled the discus 106' 7V for third, and ran in the 440 yard relay team, who ran :54.6 for fourth. Eric Cook, Donnie Doherty, and Scott Barnett were also on the team. Doherty placed second in the shot put at 42' 8 V. Thrower Deena Hams earn ed a second in the javelin, throwing 91' 9". She register ed third in the shot and discus at 28' 2V and 84' 7" re spectively. Junior Eric Cook went 15' 1 " in the long jump for a fifth place, ran 1:03.8 for 440 yards and 2:27.8 for 880 yards, plac ing sixth in each race. Freshman Candi Rudisill placed third in the long jump at 13' 4" and high jumped 3' 10" plus running : 14.0 for 100 yards. In the discus Scott Earnett was sixth at 97' 10". Inclusion on the lis! requires that a student attain a grade point average of at least 3.33. ByLANARKID Heppner girls brought home a first place win in track competition at Riverside last Tuesday, April 3. Team scores for the girls were Heppner 122, Umatilla 92, Riverside 86, Stanfield 50, Echo 49 and lone 30. The Heppner boys had good marks and times ending up in fourth place. The boys scores were lone 130, Riverside 123. Umatilla 110, Heppner 106, Stanfield 20 and Echo 10. Jumper Craig Hams was Golf team By TRAVIS HYATT The Heppner boys golf team started out slowly this year finishing in third place out of three teams, with a total of 348 strokes? but it was the first meet and they did come within five strokes of second place, Mac-Hi (343) and nineteen strokes away from first place Riverside (329). "Our team has a fair a mount of experience with se niors Jon Mitchell and Pat Struthers and some promising underclassmen in Dave Gre en, Kevin Hughe, and Travis Harrison." said coach Duane Neiffer. Those five make up 'he varsity team. Jon Mitchell was low man with a gross score of 80 Pat Struthers shot an 84, Dave Green and Kevin Hughes shot a respectable 92, and Harrison chipped in with a 105. The JV Little leaguers may try out Apr. April 14, 21 Willow Creek Little League tryouts will be held this Sa turday, April 14 at Heppner and lone announced a spokes person for the league. The tryouts at Heppner will begin at 10 a.m. at the Little League field at the fair grounds. Second place finishers were Cammie Papineau in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 20.10, the 440 relay team of McElhaney, Padberg, Orr and Payne with 55.57; and Reid in the mile run with a time of 6.31.75. Third place finishers were Missy Gates in the mile with a second in the long jump at 20' 3'a" and placed fourth triple jumping 39' 2". Distance runner Mike Doug las ran second in the 3.000 meters with a time of 10:01.0. Two fifth place slots were earned by Randy McCabe. He high jumped 5' 10" and threw the discus 111" 2". finishes 3rd boys team only played nine holes and was lead by Ken Curtis (47), Kevin Kenison (49), Keith Kenison and Jack Estberg both with 59, John Kenney (61), and Marion Mc Millan (67). "Our girls team is anchored by Ann McLaughlin who has four years experience, Jodi Matison three years; Carla Miles and Dana Keid add one year," said coach Neiffer. The girls came in third place with 156 strokes but were only playing with three players. Junior Jodi Mattison was low woman with 48, with Ann McLaughlin right behind her (49) and Dana Keid (59). "We expect to do a lot better Thursday." said coach Neif fer. The team travels to River side again April 12. A second tryout and regis tration at Heppner will be held at the same times on April 21 for those who are unable to make the tryouts this Saturday. Mustangs split double header Saturday, April 7, the Hep pner Mustangs got off to a good start in their first game of the double-header at Stan field in a 6-5 victory over Stanfield. Stanfield took the early lead on a Howard Wagoner single to right field in the first inning, but Heppner tied it up in the second inning on a RBI single by freshman Joe Taylor scor ing Tom Hammon. In the top of the third the Mustangs errupted for three runs. Mark Way drove in two with a single and Rick Riehl brought in Jim McConnell for the third run. . Stanfield got one back in the fourth to close the gap to two runs. The Tigers had their best inning in the fifth and took the lead. A walk and two costly errors gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead heading into the sixth. Jim McConnell got things started with a single and was lone tennis team defeated in opener By ASHLEY CONKLIN In their opening tennis matches of the season the lone Cardinals were defeated at home in a "coed" match by the Echo Cougars. The score was 3 2 on Tuesday, April S. In singles play, Eric Pointer defeated Missy Davis 6-1, 24, 6-4. Sandi Wright lost to Deb bie Gehrke 6-4, 1-6, 1-6. Chris McLaughlin had a time of 26.18 in the Boyi 180 hur dles. McLaughin also placed fifth in the high hurdles with a time of 20.76; Cole received fifth place in the Boys 100 meters with a time of 12.03. brought home by Riehl. Then on a busted squeeze bunt play Riehl stole home on wild throw and Heppner took the lead for good. McConnell gave up three hits, struck out 12 and walked seven for the win. Scott Wells took the loss. The second game of the twin bill was all Stanfield. Howard Wagoner,like McConnell In the first game gave up only three hits and struck out eleven. Mark Way took the loss for Heppner pitching five innings. Tom Hammon and Travii Hyatt finished up. The final score was 7-0 Stanfield. "I was pleased with our performance," said Coach Mike Royer, "McConnell pitched a great game for us and we hit well in the first game." The Mustangs have a bye Saturday but play Uma tilla Tuesday. April 17, there, at 4 p.m. Ignacio Garzon and Mike Rietmann beat Jamie Harvey and Tia Cady 6 1, 06, 6-1. In straight sets, Patty Mc Elligott and Kim McCabe lost 0-6, 0-6 to Teresa Cady and Jodi Cady. Up next for the Cardinals will be a 3 p.m. match at Umatilla on April 10, a 1:30 p.m. match at Stanfield on April 14, and a 3 p.m. match at Boardman on April 17.
