Heppner, Oregon, Thursday. lone thinclads return 7 By ASHLEY CONKLIN The lone high school boys track leant returns a strong contingent of seven members from last year's team. They are joined by six new mem bers who should add strength and depth. The Cardinals open their season April 3, at Board man, at 4 p.m. The Cardinal track team has two new aspects this year: first, Del La Rue takes over the helm as head track coach; second, lone will field a small girls team this year. Seniors Craig Hams, Howard Leavitt, Scott Barnett and Mike Douglas give the Cardinal thinclads needed ex perience. Hams and Leavitt will compete in both the long jump and triple jump. Hams is the school record holder in the triple jump. He will also parti cipate in the javelin and the sprints. Leavitt, too, will run the sprints and high jump. Barnett will participate in the weight events, primarily the discus and javelin. Big things are expected of Douglas who will be Ione's threat in the distance events. He holds school records in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meter events. Donnie Doherty is the school record holder in the shot put, and could fill in some other events this spring. Eric Cook is a newcomer to lone track and will participate in the middle distance events. Sophomores are Brian Douglas in the hurdles and middle distance. Rod Taylor in the shot put and javelin, and Jerry Anderson in the dis tance events. Freshmen are Chris Rea in the hurdles and high jump; Ashley Conklin in the long jump, hurdles and sprints; and Kierin Doherty in the distance events. Girls on the team are sophomore Michelle Beeson who will compete in the dis tance events and the shot put, freshmen Deena Hams will participate in the discus and javelin, and Candi Rudisill will handle the sprints and jumping events. La Rue had these comments, "We have been working hard in practice and if we can continue to improve, we should do very well. How competitive we will be on the district level is hard to deter mine before we see any of the competition." Anderson is the only returnee. The rest of the team is com posed of freshmen Mary Ann Alvarado, Kim McCabe, Patty McElligott and Sandi Wright. With so many young people on both teams, Sipe is starting with the fundamentals of the sport. "We are working very hard in practice and hopefully this will pay off over the course of the season. Their pitching (5.53 ERA) was last in the league; hitting (.236) was next First meet A great deal of enthusiasm and a high degree of optimism are the key elements as the Heppner High School track teams open the 19C4 spring season March 30 at Milton -Freewater in afour-way contest slated to begin at 3 p.m. The HHS girls' team is the defending champion of both the 1983 District 7A and the Columbia Basin Conference, and returns a squad nearly intact for the 1984 season. "We lost only one scoring girl from last year's team that placed at district and we are extremely optimistic about this season," said head coach Dale Conklin. "There is also more enthusiasm as we have HHS readies for 1st By LANA REID ..Practice for the Heppner trackesters started February 21, 1984. Everyone was sur prised to see such a big turnout in the number of par ticipants. For two weeks tdhe track sters were working on condi tioning and technical skills. The Heppner girls were district champs last year. There were eleven girls at the district meet with six retur ning. Five of these girls gra duated last year. "The strong point for the girls is that they are defending champs at district," said Head Coach Dale Conklin. "I think great things can happen this year, with girls getting first at district. The boys will be better than last year because of the number of participants but they have a Co. We are a fairly young team and a key for us will be how fast the freshmen and sopho set for Mar. 30 Pre 'scason track the largest turnout of girls ever at HHS." Heading up the list of re turnees is a quartet of juniors, all of whom competed in the state A meet a year ago. Janelle McElhany, Jodi Pad berg. Pam Orr and Stephanie Payne all participated in the 400 meter relay team that placed fifth in state last year. Padberg also competed in the 800 m., Orr in the javelin and Payne in the 100 m. and 200 m. and long jump to give the girls considerable experience. Others who contributed greatly to last year's cham pionship season are Melinda Eubanks, a senior shot putter and discus thrower; Nancy Martin, junior middle dis tance runner; and Lana Reid, ack of experience," reported Conklin. The leaders for the boys team will be seniors John Martin who will score highly in the distance races, John Moyer, a sprinter, and sopho more Chris McLaughlin who will participate in the hurdles Two returners from '82 are Sid Kennedy and Archie Lucas. There are many new comers for the boys team which will help out greatly. Seniors Rod Cole and Eric Thompson are expected to contribute in running events. One more senior adding poitns for the team is Jay Love. Jimmy Cason is the only junior to participate and Todd Lindsay is the only sopho more. There are two fresh men, Jason Palmer and Bert Cason. Six previous letter winners will be leading the girls' team, five juniors, and one sopho- Comm. meets en and the cairman along with Curator Johanne Wood and Curator Emeritis Rachel Har nett. Cork Norene of the Mor row County Arts and Crafts Society also attended. The annual report, which had been prepared in accor dance with the County Muse um By-Laws drawn up by Morrow County and City of Heppner attorneys, was read and approved. This report detailed the activities of the museum and its physical and financial condition. It also included reccommendations pertaining to short and long range planning for the institu tion. The board secretary has now filed this report with the county court. Mrs. Norene questioned the commission about the possi bility of the county artists using museum space for the display and sale of their prod uctions. There was some dis cussion about limiting the size and scope of the displays and about rotating the work of various artists. Also consider ed was the matter of the contribution to the museum of a percentage of any money realized from the sale of work displayed. No decision was reached regarding these mat ters. Heppner Mayor Clifford Green sent the museum the commemorative paperweight which he was presented by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the dedication of the Willow Creek Dam last summer. Orville Cutsforth offered to pay for the paint needed to repaint the one-room Dem ocrat Gulch Schoolhouse which is a part of the muse um's property. The next meeting of the Museum Commission will be held at the museum at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 15. Senior, Jay Hayes had the best record (2-5),. but Junior Jim McCon nel and senior Mark Way showed promise. The Mus sophomore long distance runner. "Last year we had the ta lent. But, I think more impor tantly this year, we have greater depth on the team to go along with the talent and ' that is going to really help this year," Conklin said. Juniors Cherrie Hager and Melissa Privett, a senior, will provide more depth in the throwing events and several promising sophomores will give more balance and depth in the running events. Melissa Gates is showing good promise in the long distance races. Missy Turner will con tribute in the sorints and Cindy Davis will add points in the hurdles and middle dis- track meet more. The only returning se nior is Malinda Eubanks who will be involved in the throw ing events. Returning juniors who will be leading the team are Janelle McElhaney, Pam Orr, Jodi Padberg, Stephanie Payne and Tiffany Lawson. McElhaney provides speed for the relay teams and the hurdle events. Orr is also a leg of the relays and contributes much in the hurdles. Jodi Padberg is one of the top distance runners in the district. She is also a big part of the relays: Stephanie Payne is one of the top sprin ters in the district and also takes part in the relays. Tiffany Lawson will add to the sprints and relays and Nancy Martin in the middle distance and jumping eventa. One returning sophomore who participates in the dis tance races is Lana Reid. Newcomers on the team are juniors CammiePapineau and Cherie Hager. Three sopho mores are Missy Turner, Missy Gates and Cindy Davis. One freshman to participate is Sherri Denton. Brent Eggers will serve his first year as assistant track coach at H.H.S. this year. "McConnell and Way will start in our double-header Saturday, with Hyatt and Orr tance. Sandra Wrattenburger is looking strong in the high jump and may contribute greatly elsewhere. Another junior, Cammie Papineau, will be helping in the springs and hurdles. The boys team is much stronger than last year, although not a title contender. Returning from last year are seniors John Martin and John Moyer. Both competed in the state meet last year. Mar tin was in the 800 and Moyer in the triple jump. Sid Kennedy, a senior, is back from two years ago, picking up where he left off as a third place finisher In the javelin at the district meet. He will also be gaining points in the shot and discus. Jay Love, a senior transfer, will be strong in javelin, also. He was the fourth place finisher in the javelin as a sophomore at lone High School. Senior Archie Lucas is ano ther returnee from two years ago and will be contributing in the running events. The other returning letterman is Chris McLaughlin who is in his second year of hurdling. Others out for track for the first year are Rod Cole, senior sprinter; Jason Palmer, a freshman weightman with great potential, and a host of high jumpers in sophomore Todd Lindsay and freshmen Scott Buschke and Kevin Florea. Although the boys turnout is small, again the enthusiasm is there. The team suffered a major setback when senior Eric Thompson fractured a growth plate in his hip in practice and is out for the season. Friday, the Heppner tracksters go against Union, Elgin and Mac-Hi. Next Tues day, at 4 p.m., they are at Boardman for a five-way meet and on Saturday, travel to Condon for the Condon Invi tational. The first home meet is slated for Tuesday, April 10, beginning at 4 p.m. Assistant track coach this year is Brent Eggers who is primarily working with the distance runners but will be helping in other areas as the season progresses. Heppner, however, has to improve on its hitting, Senior Mark Way led the team, hitting .350 with 18 RBI's and Tom Hamman showed some power. The Mus tangs were hurt with the loss of Chuck Coffman and Stan Sporsecn, but gained senior Greg Orr and some promising feshmen prospects, Dave Pedso, Troy Hyatt, Joe Taylor and Kevin Curnutt are the freshmen, but there is still a very small turnout. "I was a little disnppointed with the turnout. But when there are four spring sports at a school this size, a low turnout can be expected," said Royer. But Heppner does look strong in some areas. "With Way at shortstop, Hyatt at second, and Orr at first, our infield looks solid. There is still a question mark at third, but that should be solved when we get Hammon back (back injury). Rick Riehl is experienced behind the plate and will do the catching for us," said Royer, A major goal this year is to be competitive and to improve on the 6 12 record of last year's team.
