"We just didn't execute as well as Stanfield did. And our defense broke down in the fourth quarter," said Heppner Coach Brent Eggers. One of the men was killed in the incident. Accord ing to Barbara Bloodsworth of Heppner, Mrs. Andersen's stepmother. Mr. Anderson's arm was grazed and his shirt torn by a bullet. He also received glass slivers in his back when the windows of the vehicle in which they were riding were shot out. Mrs. Bloodsworth said a total of 22 bullet holes were found in the vehicle. According to the Philippine newspaper, "Anderson, who was himself slightly injured, got off the Bronco service vehicle and ran back to the office of the Agricultural Ven tures Corporation fDAVCO) about a mile from the ambush scene The employees he left at the ambush scene were made to lie on the faces by the armed men and were divested of their cash and wrist watches after they were identified through their respective I.D. cards. The program has been available in Heppner for about 12 years now. Classes offered through this program include English as a Second Language, G.E.D. (General Education Develop ment) classes to prepare for the G.E.D. test, Adult High School Diploma classes, and Adult Basic Education classes for people wanting to improve on general skills, such as English, math and reading. Also, classes to prepare for the U.S. citizenship test are avail able. Program instructor Joy Krein said fall term was very busy with about 15 students enrolled. Presently, four win ter term, there are 10 students taking classes, as well as three high school students who are concurrently enrolled. During this term, one student is taking the Adult High School Diploma course, one is enrolled in Adult Basic Education for skill im provement, four are taking English as a Second Language and four others are taking G.E.D. classes. Andraej and Barbara Doboszynski and Somchith Thongdy of Heppner are three of the students taking English as a Second Language classes. "All of them have made great progress." Krein said. The Doboszynkis came to Heppner from Poland and have been enrolled in the program since September. She has been tak ing the class for three years. Krein tells the public not to be afraid to speak to the E.S.L, students, just speak clearly and slowly. The classes run throughout the school year and a 10-week program is scheduled during the summer months. Students can attend classes on a drop in basis and can utilize the pro crnm on a schedule that is most convenient to them. How ever, "Attendance is the key," Krein states, and adds that the students are very diligent in coming to class. During the Inst five years, since Krein has been instruct ing the classes, five people have received adult high school diplomas and 11 others have received G.E.D. certifi cates. Krein said that several people have started the pro grams in Heppner but later left the area and completed the programs elsewhere. Several of her former students have gone on to receive higher education. Krein. who has a B.S. in elementary education and a current teaching certificate, is aided in instruction by Peggy Fishburn of Heppner, an aide, and Nella Britt of Lexington, a volunteer. Classes are held at the Hep pner Neighborhood Center on Mondays from 1 to 4 p m. and on Wednesdays from 7 to 10 p m.
