Falcons By TRAVIS HYATT The Heppner Mustangs came out of the locker room as flat as a pancake and finished like they started in a 58-41 deteat at the hands of the Wheeler Falcons last Tuesday night, Jan. 10. The first quart er was by far the worst quarter for the Mustangs. In fact. Wheeler Co. forward Bill Macinnes out-scored the Mus tangs 10-8 in the quarter and after one the score was 20-8. The Mustangs out-scored Wheeler 10-9 in the second quarter as Tom Hammon chipped in with six points and the score on the half was 29-18. "We really battled back in the second quarter, I didn't think were were out of the game yet," said HHS Coach Brent Eggers. Wheeler's defense was too much for the Mustangs in the third quarter as Heppner only scored five points and were down by 21 points heading into the fourth. In the fourth. Heppner was lone Jr. High to Arlington By ASHLEY C ONKLIN The lone Jr. High girl s basketball team fell to 0-3 with a 27 to 11 loss to the Arlington Goslings on Thursday, Jan. 12. Arlington jumped out to a nine to two lead in the first quarter. The Goslings doubled the Cardinal's point output in the second period to increase their lead to 17-6 at intermission. In the third stanza lone was again out-scored. This time it was 10 to two as lone trailed 8-27. The Cards shutout the Gos lings in the fourth quarter, to lone Jr. High boys' team improves record By ASHLEY CONKLIN The lone Jr. High boys' basketball team improved their record to 1-2 with a 33-19 victory over the Arlington Goslings on Thursday. After going 0-3 in league action they took their frustrations out on the Umatilla Vikings in a 71-54 romp in an important game for Heppner. "Nothing I did got them ready. They were just ready to plav both nights, we were more disciplined than Umatil la was," said Heppner Coach Brent Eggers. Heppners however, still re mains last in league play. Umatilla dropped to 1-2. After averaging only 42 points in their league games, the Mus tangs managed 20 first quart er points against Umatilla and never looked back. John Mar tin led Heppner with 27 points, his career high, and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Mustangs came out loose and agressive and never slacked off until they had a comfortable half time lead. 38-28. "We just try and take one game at a time." said Eggers on his team's chances of mak ing district. Heppner never let off in the third period, although Umatil la tied the Mustangs in the I lilies embarrass Rockets By DANA REID The Heppner varsity Fillies traveled to Pilot Rock to take a league win over the Pilot Rock Rockets on Friday Jan. 13 The Pilot Rock Rockets had the home court advantage but the Heppner Fillies didn't let that stop them They started the game off with the first two points. Heppner was really playing good defense with a lot of hustle. The first quarter was an important one for the Fil lies and with their good defen sive rebounds and tough defense Heppner held the Rockets down to only 3 points in the first quarter while Heppner had 14. The Rockets recieved the tipoff to start the second quarter but the Fillies didn't let that discourage them. They were down on defense, keep ing the Rockets from scoring. Heppner started to get into a little foul trouble which gave Pilot Rock a chance for a few free points. The game was still close at the end of the second quarter but Heppner came out on top. 20-13. The Fillies came out on the court to start the second half fired up and ready to win. They were running through their plays and being patient until they had an open shot for two. Heppner con tinued to play great basketball and was still in the lead at the end of the third quarter with a score of 33-23. As the Fillies went out to plav the final quarter of the game, they knew all they had to do was play tough defense and get those rebounds, and that's exactly what Heppner did On offense the Fillies were really playing great team ball and as for defense. Heppner kept the Rockets from scoring, A great, well deserved win went to the Heppner Fillies. The final score was Heppner 48. Pilot Rock 30 Pam Orr led the Fillies with 14 points, followed by Jodi Padberg with 13. Orr and Padberg both had eight re bounds. Stephi Payne had six assists and Padberg had seven steals. "It was a very big win for us. We played with a lot of intensity. We did a super job on the boards and defensively we shot down their inside game almost completely. "Offensively we could have plaved better but we did do the things that we had to do to win." said Coach Mike Rover. HK. "If we would have shot free throws better we would have won." said Coach Brent Fggers on his team's loss. Indeed they would have. Pilot Kock was 18 for 24 from the line, while Heppner just managed to connect on eight of 20 attempts. However. Hep pner w as not out of it by any means in the first quarter. It took four minutes before any team scored in the quarter and when the buzzer rang eht score was 6-4 at the end of one. Heppner's worst quarter was the second "Our defense broke down in the second quarter, and our free throws hurt us." said Eggers. Heppner went out a little slow to start the game but as the game went on the Fillies plaved better. Heppner was plaving good team ball, pas sing the ball around looking lor an open shot. The Fillies were really hustling on de fense and getting a lot of defensive rebounds. The Vik ings were ahead at the end of the first quarter but the Fillies didn't let that discourage them They were back in for the second quarter ready to plav The rebounds weren't coming quite as easy but the Fillies really worked for them. Mv the end of the second quarter Umatilla was still ahead but Heppner's good defense held the Viking's to onlv five (mints in the second quarter. Heppner scored nine, making the score 13 15 The third quarter started as Umatilla received the tipoff. Heppner was plaving kumt defense and their fast breaks were even better. The Fillies started with a lot of hustle and detemlnation. They were playing good offense and defense Heppner was really hustling on defense and had a lot of steals which allowed for a lay-in and two points. Foul trouble for the Fillies gave the Vikings a chance to get hack in the game, but Heppner came hack strong again lo keep their lead over the Vikings The Fillies won the game 45 - 35 "Our offense was weak dur ing the first quarter, but steadily got better as the game progressed We played strong defense and kept them from scoring During the fourth quarter we broke the game 0cn. by using a full court press.
