Unidentified Cardinal is tied up By ASHLEY CONKLIN lone's boys' basketball team fell to 3 - 7 in the season and 0-2 in Big Sky Conference play after losing to the Arlington Honkers 52 to 38 on Saturday, Jan. 7. The Cardinals took a 12-8 lead after the opening period of play. Randy McCabe scored six of the Cardinal points. January 6. The game was played on the Grizzlies' home court. Troy Molendyke hit for nine first stanza points to produce a lead of 17-10 for Helix. Randy McCabe scored eight for the Cardinals. lone only had an output of eight points in the second stanza compared to 14 for the Grizzlies. Helix led 31 to 18 at halftime The Grizzlies exploded for 30 points in the third stanza to take a commanding 61-32 lead. Craig Newston and Molendyke led the burst with 10 and nine points respectively. Helix added 18 points to lone's 10 in the fourth period to win 79-42. From the free throw line, lone made 4 of 11 shots for 36 percent to 9 of 15 for 60 percent for the Grizzlies. The Cards made 19 of 51 field goals for 37 percent compared to 35 of 65. 54 percent for Helix. McCabe led all scorers with 23 points. Molendyke and Tim Porter led the Grizzlies with 19 points apiece. Arlington scored 11 as the Honkers won 52 to 38. McCabe led the Cardinals in scoring with 12 points. However, by the end of the first nuarter. the Fillies were ahead with a score of 11-4. As the second quarter star led, so did Heppner's defense. The Fillies were playing tough and forcing the Pirettes to take outside shots. Heppner did set up its offensive plays a couple of times and scored off them At the end of the second quarter, the Fillies were still in the lead. Heppner came out to play the second half of the game with confidence. The Fillies were really hustling Heppner Jr. High girls Bv AS1II.KYCONKIJN The lone Jr. High girls" basketball team dropped too 2 on Thursday. Jan. 5 to the Echo Cougars. The final score was 25 to 12. Both teams played very good defense in the first quar ter, and as a result neither team scored many points. Echo did however, manage a two to nothing lead. The Cougars tripled lone's point production in the second period and took a halftime lead of 14 to 4 In the third stanza the Cou gars picked up where they left off and out-scored the Cardi nals nine to two to increase their lead to 23 - 6. lone tripled the Cougars' point output in the fourth quarter, but Echo won 25 - 12 Kris Anderson led the Cards Medic Volunteers Needed For Local Medic Alert Week Medic Alert Foundation is seeking volunteers to help conduct a local, community-wide Medic AJert Week effort. Finally the game was over and Heppner was on top with a score of 56-28. Pam Orr put in 12 points for the Fillies and also had 12 rebounds. The tenm that did this was none other than the Weston McFwen TigerScots, who showed how explosive they could be in a 8- - 45 thumping of the Heppner Mustangs last Saturday at Athena. Weston-McEwe n raised their record to 20 in the league, Heppner dropped to 02 in the Columbia Basin Conference east and 5-5 over all "Our game plan was to try and control the tempo," said Heppner Coach Brent Eggers, "but those two cherry picks and our turnovers killed us " coach Eggers also said that Rod Cole played very well this weekend.
