Heppner 676-9116 lone JV team By ASHLEY CONKLIN For the second time this season the lone J.V. team beat the Heppner freshmen. On Saturday. Dec. 17. the score was 38 to 28 and lone is now 5-2. The first quarter was a very low scoring one with lone taking a five to two lead. With six points from both Brian Douglas and Steve Mill man in the second period, the Cardinals took a halftime lead of 19-6. Mike Rietmann scored eight of 11 lone points in the third stanza as lone increased their lead to 30-11. Heppner came back to out score the Cards 17-8 in the fourth quarter but lone won 38-28. Wayne Wilgers and Rob Riehl had eight and seven points respectively for the Mustangs. lone made four of nine foul shots for 44 percent. Heppner made two of 20 for 10 percent. Millman led the Cardinal scoring attack with 10. Wil gers led the Mustangs with 13. lone Talented & Gifted Program offers many learning opportunities The Talented and Gifted Program at lone schools is offering students a wide variety of learning opportuni ties. One large group project that was recently completed was a full-scale Christmas pageant play on Christmas customs that will later be the focal point for classroom spinoffs on different world cultures. This project involves students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Another venture has each student writing an auto biography that will eventually be published. The best stories from fourth, fifth and sixth graders will be entered in a national contest, said a pro gram spokesperson. Also, poster contests for various causes serve as an art recog nition for every age level, she added. Individual classroom pro grams focus on individual needs, the spokesperson says. The kindergarten class has reading members of the class involved in an accelerated reading program. Dramatics will be the next emphasis. First grade students have written an original play from the book "Mother, Mother, May I Have Another," inclu ding dialogue, actions and costumes, which was presen mm beats HHS Frosh lone played at Condon on Tuesday. TP 17 2 It 38 lone Falcons defeat lone JV By ASHLEY CONKLIN The lone J V. boys' basket ball team lost to the Wheeler Falcons 48 to 52 on Friday. Dec. 16. Wheeler jumped out to a 15 to 5 lead at the end of the first stanza. Richard Mangum scored seven points in the quarter. The Falcons increased their lead to 31 -13 at halftime as Bob Thomas had seven of Whee ler's points. lone came roaring back in the third quarter, out-scoring the Falcons 20 to 8 to pull within 39-33. Brian Douglas and Eric Pointer each scored six for the Cardinals in that period. The Cardinals out-scored Wheeler 15 to 13. but it wasn't enough as the Falcons held on to win 52-48. ted to parents and community members. Another guieu ac tivity has involved library research on a specific topic.S Third grade gifts will be displayed in the form of books to be presented to the lower classes. Third grade students are also writing biographies as a companion project to the autobiographies the entire school is doing. The fourth grade has pre sented a play on "Little Women," and provided gifted students the opportunity to produce replicas of King Tut's artifacts in their study of Egypt. The fifth and sixth grade advanced reading class is in the process of producing poetry for an "East Orego nian" page. They created a pa per of their own not too long ago. entitled "Hamlin Ga zette," with each article created from a "rat" focus. Their recent nutrition re search project was also espe cially adaptive to individual talents, Uie spokesperson ex plained. The sixth grade is also conducting research on solar energy with mock models being built and individual re search supporting reports. Watermaster to be in j Lexington Beginning Tuesday. Jan. 6. 1984. Larry H. Nunn. the watermaster for the Umatilla Drainage Basin, will hold of fice hours on the first and third Fridays of each month, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Morrow County Public Works Dept. building in Lex ington. The announcement was made December 23 by the Water Resources Department in Pendleton. The watermaster will be available to answer questions, look up water rights, look up well logs and assist with water right applications and trans fers. Anyone wishing to see the watermaster mav make an annointment with the Pub' lie Works Dept. secretary at 989-8554. or they may drop in. The Umatilla Basin water master covers the area drained by the Walla Walla River, Umatilla River and Willow Creek. The watermas ter currently has offices in Pendleton and Milton-Free-water.
