lone Talented & Gifted Program
offers many learning opportunities
The Talented and Gifted
Program at lone schools is
offering students a wide
variety of learning opportuni
ties. One large group project that
was recently completed was a
full-scale Christmas pageant
play on Christmas customs
that will later be the focal
point for classroom spinoffs on
different world cultures. This
project involves students from
kindergarten through sixth
grade. Another venture has
each student writing an auto
biography that will eventually
be published. The best stories
from fourth, fifth and sixth
graders will be entered in a
national contest, said a pro
gram spokesperson. Also,
poster contests for various
causes serve as an art recog
nition for every age level, she
added.
Individual classroom pro
grams focus on individual
needs, the spokesperson says.
The kindergarten class has
reading members of the class
involved in an accelerated
reading program. Dramatics
will be the next emphasis.
First grade students have
written an original play from
the book "Mother, Mother,
May I Have Another," inclu
ding dialogue, actions and
costumes, which was presen

members.
The second grade also pre
sented a play with original
costumes. Another guieu ac
tivity has involved library
research on a specific topic.S
Third grade gifts will be
displayed in the form of books
to be presented to the lower
classes. Third grade students
are also writing biographies
as a companion project to the
autobiographies the entire
school is doing.
The fourth grade has pre
sented a play on "Little
Women," and provided gifted
students the opportunity to
produce replicas of King Tut's
artifacts in their study of
Egypt.
The fifth and sixth grade
advanced reading class is in
the process of producing
poetry for an "East Orego
nian" page. They created a
pa per of their own not too long
ago. entitled "Hamlin Ga
zette," with each article
created from a "rat" focus.
Their recent nutrition re
search project was also espe
cially adaptive to individual
talents, Uie spokesperson ex
plained. The sixth grade is also
conducting research on solar
energy with mock models
being built and individual re
search supporting reports.

'The lone Junior-Senior
High Talented and Gifted
Program. like the Elementary
one. is often a cooperative
across-the-ages project, tak
ing advantage of talents and
gifts where we find them," the
spokesperson said.
Typical examples are the
use of Jr. High art students for
designing and producing
graphic necessities for "The
Cardinal." the school news
paper; or temporarily com
bining English and History
classes to produce essays on
the topic "What is my Job in
Upholding the Constitution,"
or a production corporation
class composed of accounting
and industrial arts students
that manufactures products
as a business might, and sells
them to the public.
An advanced welding class
produces utility trailers for
sale, while "special" biology
students participate in experi
mental projects.
"Individuals are given op
portunities to improve their
skills, develop their talents
and grow in every way that we
can provide as a common
practice in our small school,
and we're proud of our stu
dents' achievements," the
spokesperson concluded.
