H?U lone girls drop 1st of season By ASHLEY CONKLIN For the first time this sea son the lone girls' basketball team lost on Friday. Dec. 9. The Cardinals lost to the Hep pner Fillies 54 - 22. Heppner exploded for 20 points compared to seven for Tone. Stephani Payne had six points for the Fillies while Deena Hams had four first quarter points for the Cardi nals. The Fillies outscored the Cards 14 to 4 in the second stanza to take a halftime lead of 34 -11. All of lone 's points in the stanza came from the free throw line. In the third period Heppner increased their lead to 46-15. The Fillies only outscored lone 8 to 7 in the fourth quarter. lone made 8 of 33 field goals for 24 percent and 6 of 15 from the foul line. 40 percent. Heppner made 27 of 52 field goals for 52 percent. Heppner didnt make a free throw in six attempts. Hams led the Cards in scor ing with 12 points. Payne, Lana Reid and Jodi Padberg each had eight for the Fillies. On Tuesday, the Cards were to take on the Riverside Pi rates and on Friday will hostd Wheeler Co. On Saturday, they will meet Heppner again, at Heppner. Riverside jumped out to a 10-4 lead over lone in the first quarter. The Cardinals didn't score in the second period, while the' Pirates scored eight to take a 18 to 4 intermission lead Brian Douglas and Mike Rietmann scored all of lone's points in the third stanza but Riverside still led 32 to 12. The Pirates out-scored the Cards 14 to 4 in the fourth quarter as Riverside won 4R-17. From the foul line. lone connected on only 21 percent of their shots making three of 14. Riverside made two of nine which is 22 percent. Rietmann scored eight for the Cards. Douglas had six and Steve Millman added three. The Cards played at home aeainsf Riverside on Tuesday. Dec. 13. will be at home against Wheeler Co on Friday. Dec. 16. and are to play at Heppner on Saturday. Dec. 17 against the Mustangs. Heppner Conch Mike Rover brought along three junior varsity girls: Susie Martin. Oindi Stroeher and Theresa Lindsay. Heppner received the tip off and was off to a good start. The Fillies took the ball down the court and set it up to run their play for a sure two poiins. Heppner. back on defense, kept the lone Cardi nals from scoring. The Fillies continued a very good hustle and came out on lop at the end of the second quarter with the score of 34 11. After a pep talk from Coach Rover and a few practice shots, the Fellies came out to start the second half of the game fired up and ready. The Fillies continued to play pood ball as the JV team went into the game and gave the Cardi nals a touch fight. The Fillies were still in the lead at the end of the third quarter w ith a score of 4(1-15. The varsity team started their fourth quarter and ran through their plays again, hustling back on defense. The Cardinals were playing great defense hut at the end of the enme Heppner was on top 54-22. Jodi Padberg. Stephl Payne and Jjina Reid all put in eight points for the Fillies. Patn Orr nulled down eight rebounds, Stephi Payne passed five assists for the Fillies and Pnvne and Dana Reid both bad three steals. "I was pleased with the way we pl.nved. A lot of players contributed and we were in control from start to finish. "Were starting to he more patient on offense and it's paving off," said Couch Mike Hover. The Fillies were to meet Condon on Tuesday t Hep pner and will slay home Thursday to meet Riverside.
