ByDWAREID Basketball season for the Heppner Fillies began with the Morrow County Invita tional tournament, which was hosted by the Heppner High Mustangs and Fillies. The tournament took place Friday and Saturday. December 2 and 3. The teams participating were the Riverside Pirates, Imbler Panthers, Mohawk Indians and the Heppner Mus tangs and Filiies. The Heppner Fillies played the first game against the Imbler Panthers at 2 p.m. on L ; phon by Jon Mitti Friday. Dec. 2. The Fillies went out on the court very enthusiastically, but the Panthers left center gave them the tip off. With both teams' good defense, the score was kept low at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter showed little increase in the score and in the third quarter, the Fillies came back fighting hard to gain control. The Panthers height and determination kept the Fillies from scoring and led the game at the end of the third quarater. The Fillies continued to lone downs Spray 51-49 By ASHLEY CONKLIN For the second night in a row, the lone boys' basketball team used a strong second half against the Spray Eagles on Saturday, Dec. 3. lone won 51-49 to improve their record to 2-0. Randy McCabe scored 10 points as lone took a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Spray capitalized on numerous Cardinal turnovers in the second stanza to lead at halftime 27 to 16. Mark Dumler and Rich Foster each scored six in the stanza for the Eagles. lone pulled to within 41-35 by outscoring Spray 19-14 in the third period. Mark Meyers had eight for lone in the period. The Cards tied the score at 49 in the fourth quarter. Then, with 24 seconds remaining, Meyers made two foul shots, which turned out to be the game winning points as lone won 5M0. For the game, lone connected on 22 of 57 field goals for 39 percent. lone was seven of 15, 47 percent from the charity stripe. Spray made 23 of 64 field goals for 36 percent. From the foul line, the Eagles made three of five for 60 percent. The Eagles out-rebounded the Cardinals 39-27. Rich Foster and Mark Dumler had 12 and 10 rebounds respectively. McCabe had six boards for lone, while Darrin Padberg, Craig Hams and Howard Leavitt collected five apiece. McCabe also had 19 points and Meyers scored 16. For Spray Dumler also had 19 and Foster made 12. lone will hostd Heppner on Friday, Dec 9, and will travel to Boardman to play Riverside on Saturday, Dec. 10. At 6:30 p.m. on Friday, the Mohawk Indians and the Ri verside Pirates met to see w ho would face the Imbler Pan thers to compete for the championship title. The Mo hawk Indians outplayed the Pirates with a score of 31-20. On Saturday at 2 p.m., the Heppner Fillies returned to the court to compete for third place. The Rame began with a slow start However, Heppner did receive the tip off. The Fillies were competing but not play ing to their ability although they played well enough to remain on top at the end of the second quarter. At half time Heppner Coach Mike Rover reminded the Fil lies they were capable of much better playing. Heppner came back strong, proving their coach was right. The Fillies took a strong lead and maintained it the rest of the game with the final score being Filiies 37. Pirates 17. This game gave the Heppner Fillies third place and the Riverside Pirates fourth, Stephi Payne lead the Fillies with nine points. Pam Orr grabbed down the most re bounds, with 11. Stephi Payne also had the msot assists for I her team with three and Jodi Padberg took in the most steals with three. The championship game was played at 6:30 p m. Satur day with the Imbler Panthers going all the way for first place, leaving the Mohawk Indians in second. r Spray Early!
