Heppner Fillies take By DANA RKID Thursday. Sept. 29. the J.V. Fillies played an exciting game against the Umatilla Vikings. The game was played at Umatilla. The first match was a close one The Vikings made the first few points but the Fillies stayed right in there. The Fillies had super team work and were playing very well. They had very few serves that didn't go over the net. The serves for the Vikings were the same. The Vikings' serves were down hard in the back row They really made the Fillies hustle and do a lot of talking The Fillies weren't doing quite as well playing the ball after it was received and Heppner only made one point when the Vikings made two so the game went to the Vikings. The score was 15 17. The Fillies were really fired up and ready to go now. They knew they had to win the next match to stay in the game. The Fillies had the first serve and it was over. The Vikings just weren't set to receive the ball so the Fillies scored. They were off to a good start, but later in the game the Vikings were serving well. With a lillie trouble at the net for the Fillies the Vikings scored a few more points and were ahead of the Fillies. But that didn't scare the Fillies. They were still in there. The Fillies were really hustlisng and ready for the ball, to be anywhere because Umatilla's serves would go anywhere. The Fillies started to get a handle on the ball and were bumping, setting and spiking them down. The Vikings were also doing the same. The score was getting tied back up again and it was close to the end of the game. The Fillies made some mistakes that they shouldn't have but they cer tainly made up for them and went Into an extra long game with a final score of 15-13. However, in the third match, which decided who would win the game, was an even tougher one. It was a fight to the finish. The Fillies won the coin toss and got the first serve. As the serve was hit over hard, the action star ted. Both teams wanted to win the game and did their best. The score was close all the way through the game. Both Coig Hom (44) fight for Offensively, Leavitt carried 21 times for 171 yards while Hams rushed for 111 yards on 14 rushes. lone had 30G yards rushing and 312 yards of total offense. "We stopped our selves in the first half but we played very good in the second half We had a good pass rush teams' serves were very good. The Fillies had a bit of trouble receiving at first, but after a time out and a pep talk, they were out to win. The Fillies picked the serves up and set them right to the setter for a spike. Towards the end of the game both teams were ser ving poorly. The ball went into the net or out of bounds but no points for either team were lost because both teams were having serving trouble. The score was tied up at one point, then the Vikings would score to put them in the lead, but the Fillies would receive it well and make it a side out. Then the Fillies tied the score again. Having to win by two was a close game but the Fillies pulled through. The score was 15-10. The second match was not good for the Fillies. They were having trouble receiving the ball. "We did super and worked very well toge ther." "got to want to make it happen and we did!" were a few comments from the JV players. "We had kind of a slow start but I felt, over all, we did very good offensively and defen sively and we outplayed Umatilla. A lot of team work was part of what made us win," said Coach Karen Howe. The Fillies won the match and the game. The score was 15-0. "The last game we didn't do well, receiving the serves but this game we did very well. I guess practice paid off. Heppner, Oregon, Thursday. October , 1983 FIVE Heppner defeated by Umatilla Vikings 14-19 By MELISSA PRIVETT There was still excitement in Ide air ati the Heppner Mustangs walked off their home field Friday night after being defeated by the Umatil la Vikings 14-19. With four seconds left in the fourth quarter, Eric Thomp son threw a pass to Greg Orr and it was completed down to the eight yard line. The crowd roared their approval but were soon disappointed when the referee said that the pass was made beyond the line of scrimage. Though the team and the onlookers were not happy with the call. Coach Craig Kitching commented. "I assumed it was the right call. I don't think he'd make the wrong call on purpose," It was because of that call that the Mustangs did not gain the points that they needed to win the game. But Heppner did start off the scoring when John Moyer made the first touchdown in the first quarter on a two-yard run. Greg Orr scored on a 50-yard pass inter ception, followed by Eric Thompson running in the extra point in the fourth quar ter. The gap in the second quar ter that the Mustangs failed to fill with touchdowns was kept active by Umatilla's Rob Sil lamanca. who made all of his team's three touchdowns; the first on a touchdown pass and the others on rushing. He also kicked the extra point. Umatilla was expected to play well, but so was Heppner. "I was impressed with the way we came back," stated Kitching. referring to a pre vious game against Sherman. "We shouldn't have dug our selves a hole in the second quarter. They scored all of their points then." This was partly because of the Mustang's offensive play ing. Kitching replied, "We had problems blocking the right people. Umatilla was sending their linebackers through the line and we weren't picking them up. That led to them tackling our backs behind the lien of scrimmage. "Defensively we had some mental lapses and it cost us points. We just need to use our Year Certificate 6 Month Money Market Certificate m Year Fixed Rate Certificate '2 Year Fixed Rate Certificate 3V2 Year Fixed Rate Certificate heads more, block the right people, and go to the right areas of defense." the coach added. What were the general atti tudes of the players before the game? Kitching answered, "Nervous. We thought we could win. We expected a tough ball game and it was. We go into every ball game expecting to win." But whether those feelings had any effect on how they played resulted in another comment from the coach. "It's good to be a little bit nervous and on edge. It keep the adrenalin flowing. We were anxious, but I don't think that affected us, just the breakdowns. Not by nervous ness, just not thinking." The Mustangs will travel to Wahtonka High School at The Dalles this Friday for the game against the Eagles at 7:30 p.m. Wahtonka has been scouted by Heppner and they appear to offensively run a lot of "man in motion" in every play. "They are bigger than we are. That's nothing new to us." Kitching laughed. Concentration will be needed for the Mustangs to win this game, along with blocking the right people and remembering their defensive assignments. w I plus Friday & 9am Coffee & 4 We Provide QUALITY Plants at REASONABLE Prices!
