Hunters can help stop spread of noxious plant Hunters can help in several ways to prevent the spread of tansy ragwort in Eastern Oregon, says the Oregon De partment of Fish and Wildlife in Portland. This noxious plant, common in western Oregon, has only been found east of the Cascades in recent years. It is poisonous to some species of livestock and efforts Local news bits The local Quintra bus. used for senior citizen transporta tion has been used quite a bit during the past several weeks. A group of Heppner people traveled to Pendleton to watch the Dress Up Parade, and lone citizens took in the Westward Ho! Parade in Pendleton dur ing Round-Up. Last week 15 lone women went to Sisters on a sightsee ing trip. There they visited a reindeer farm. They later went on to Redmond and visited Hatfield's store. The owners of the store owned local stores in this area in the past. They also visited lone residents Doc and Beulah Sherer's daughter. Kay. Lloyd Howton of Hermiston, a former area resident and the father of Judy Rea of lone, is a patient at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland where he had major surgery. Mrs. Rea left Monday to visit him. Mr. Howton 's son. Jim Howton, of Hermiston. was taken by Lifeguard III to receive medi cal attention after suffering a heart attack while cutting wood in this area recently. Hunters who see tansy rag wort in Eastern Oregon are asked by the Department of Fish and Wildlife to report the location to department biolo gist. State Police, the U.S. Forest Service. Bureau of Land Management. State Forestry Department, or county extension offices. Last year 122 tansy sites were located in northeasdt Oregon alone. 17 of them reinfestations from the pre vious year. The first siting of tansy in Eastern Oregon oc curred in 1969. About two-thirds of all sit ings have been close to camp ing areas, and many of them in popular hunting spots. Hun ters who see tansy plants can help stamp it out by clipping flowering plants off just below the topmost flowering head. The clipped portion should be placed in a plastic bag and later burned. The clipping will cause the plant to put on a spurt of new growth but there will not be enough time for the plant to grow new flowering heads and seeds before frost kills the plant. Plants should not be pulled up by the roots since they can regenerate from any roots left underground. And the accu rate location should be repor ted to any of the agencies listed above so further action and followup checks can be made. Some infestations have been traced directly to hunters who bring contaminated hay from western Oregon to feed riding and pack animals, or to insu late tent floors. Hunters are asked to buy hay after they arrive in Eas tern Oregon or to feed their animals pelleted rations. Stock should be fed pelleted food or tansy-free hay for at least 48 hours before transport to Eastern Oregon to insure tansy will not be spread in their manure. Tansy is identified by its lacy leaves and clusters of yellow, daisy -like flowers near the top. In Australia the plant is called "stinking Willy" be cause the leaves have a dis tinctive odor. Hay. straw and pelleted feed can be purchased from many outlets throughout Eastern Oregon.
