Zelma McDaniel, outgoing treasurer, chaired the meeting. New officers include Presi dent Ernest Allen, Vice-president Dallas McDaniel, Secre tary Rod Fulton and Treasur er Beverly Harris. Directors on the board are Duane Rankin, Nathan Mam mons, Jere Le Doux, Mike Stickney and Brian Sweeney. Sept. 26, 10 a.m. to noon; at the Irrigon county offices on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1 to 4 p.m.: at Boardman City Hall On Tuesday, (Jet . 4, 1:30 to 4 p.m.; and at the lone Bank of Local wheat By HOB COSTA OSU Extension Agent Morrow County Morrow County wheat growers enjoyed the second highest average yields ever in 1983, but total wheat produc tion was the lowest in six years. The average wheat yield on dryland was 42 bushels per acre on 135,000 acres. The average yield for irrigated wheat was 90 bushels per acre on 15,000 acres. Total wheat production for Morrow County was seven million bushels. The number of acres plan ted to wheat in MorrowCounty was the lowest In 10 years as a result of U.S. D A. farm pro Eornei Allan, Ooby Hommom, throuRh OctotHT 31 beginning at 4 a m. The doors will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Benefits from the sale are used for scholarship and citi zenship awards that are given each year by the club. His appoint ments will be made at the next meeting on October 15. The group discussed having a flea market in the summer and Mammons was appointed chairman of that activity. Zelma McDaniel and Juan ita Carmichael received pints of plum Jam from the group in appreciation of the work they have done over the years. The jam was made from a plum tree in an old orchard in Hardman. The group's next meeting will be held October 15, 2 p.m.. the following groups of people are at high risk for serious illness from flu and recom mend they be immunized: people 65 years of age or older. People over 13 years of age who have a chronic illness, diabetes, anemia, cancer or an immunological disorder land with 29,000 acres. The yields of fall planted barley were excellent, but spring barley yields were mostly dis appointing due to late seeding and disease problems. Two citizenship awards are given to local high school seniors each December, and in the spring two scholarships are given to Morrow County high school seniors at gradua tion. County Court adopts amendment to Airport Hazard Zoning Ordinance By MARY ANN C'ERULLO Morrow County Court last Wednesday adopted as an emergency ordinance, an Air port Hazard Zoning Ordinance Amendment to Ordinance MCC2. Morrow County Counsel Mike Oths recommended that the court adopt the amend ment for runway restrictions on the l?xington Airport to qualify for a federal grant. Morrow County building inspector's hours announced On July 1. Morrow County initiated its first full-time Building Inspection and Zon ing Administration services as a branch of its Planning De partment. On July 15, the county hired Roger D. Con verse as its building official and zoning adminstrator. Converse, and his wife, Patty, and two daughters Cari and Mandi, come from Mehama and currently reside in the Irrigon area. Converse has had past experience with the City of Ashland and the Oregon State Highway Department and 16 years as a building contractor. He graduated from Cheme keta Community College in 1982 in Building Inspection services. OREGON Search for new school superintendent actively underway The search for a new super intendent of the Morrow County School District is ac tively underway, with the board of directors hearing a report Monday night from a committee in charge of find ing a replacement. Present Superintendent Matt Doherty informed the hoard earlier he intends to resign as soon as a replace ment can be found. According to the report Monday the district will ad vertise the position beginning lone considers contracting for garbage collection The lone City Council dis cussed the possibility of hav ing garbage collection service contracted with a Hermiston disposal company, reported Diarina Starr, city recorder. The City of lone owns its own garbage truck and presently the service is being handled through the city. However, Starr said, the service is not cost effective and must be subsidized. The county's application for the federal grant, which will come from taxes on aviation fuel, accompanies an $800,000 county master plan to im prove the county airport in Lexington. Morrow County Court began interviewing aviation en gineers last week to make the final detailed plan for con struction. Under the improved plan, offices in the county with the following hours: Lexington -Monday, Wednesday and Fri day from 8 to 10:30 a.m.; Irrigon Tuesday and Thurs day from 8 to 10:30 a.m. As inspections require a majority of time in the field, the staff has requested that appoint ments be made for those times that an individual can not be in the office during the prescrib ed hours. The following per mits may be obtained from the Morrow County Building De partment: building permits, mobile home setup and plumb ing hookup permits and mechanical permits. In other business, the coun cil: - heard a short presentation from Morrow County Sheriff Roy Drago who informed council members on the duties the present 2.520 ft. runway will serve as a taxi area. A new 4,355 ft. runway will accommodate larger planes. New fencing, improved taxi way surface and a parking area are also a part of the plan. In other business, the court: - moved to continue a public hearing October 12 at 9 a.m. on the upgrading of eight streets before turning them day and Thursday. The main planning office in Lexington now provides full map files and survey files with duplica tion facilities for map copies. The committee indicated in its report it would use a committee of nine to screen the applications received by the district. The auditor said the dis trict is in good financial shape, showing a surplus balance in the general fund last year of $1,088,928. The money was carried over into the present budget year as a tax offset. Most of the money was earned interest from a large tax payment from Portland Gen eral Electric last year, said Superintendent Doherty. "You received more and spent less than you thought," said auditor Brent Fife. "This is a credit to your administra tion. She plans to become a licensed insurance agent this winter, probably in February. Swanson Insurance recently installed a new computer which Brownfield will be us- ing. One of the computer's uses will be to determine how much crop insurance farmers need, she said. Thiss will be demonstrated at a Crop Insur ance Seminar October 12 in lone. More details about the seminar will be announced next week. After obtaining her license, Brownfield will be ab)e to sell insurance for V company, which is a full st. . ce agency.
