during meeting September
18, and plans are underway for
several activities in the small
community. Zelma McDaniel,
outgoing treasurer, chaired
the meeting.
New officers include Presi
dent Ernest Allen, Vice-president

tary Rod Fulton and Treasur
er Beverly Harris.

Department will be holding flu
Immunization clinics at the
Heppner Neighborhood Center
on Monday. Sept. 26, 10 a.m. to
noon; at the Irrigon county
offices on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1
to 4 p.m.: at Boardman City

Morrow County wheat
growers enjoyed the second
highest average yields ever in
1983, but total wheat produc
tion was the lowest in six
years.
The average wheat yield on
dryland was 42 bushels per
acre on 135,000 acres. The
average yield for irrigated
wheat was 90 bushels per acre
on 15,000 acres.
Total wheat production for
Morrow County was seven
million bushels.
The number of acres plan
ted to wheat in MorrowCounty
was the lowest In 10 years as a

The group discussed having
a flea market in the summer
and Mammons was appointed
chairman of that activity.

of plum Jam from the group in
appreciation of the work they
have done over the years. The
jam was made from a plum
tree in an old orchard in
Hardman.
The group's next meeting
will be held October 15, 2 p.m..

verse as its building official
and zoning adminstrator.
Converse, and his wife,
Patty, and two daughters Cari
and Mandi, come from
Mehama and currently reside
in the Irrigon area.
Converse has had past
experience with the City of
Ashland and the Oregon State
Highway Department and 16
years as a building contractor.
He graduated from Cheme

Search for new school superintendent
actively underway
The search for a new super
intendent of the Morrow
County School District is ac
tively underway, with the
board of directors hearing a
report Monday night from a
committee in charge of find
ing a replacement.
Present Superintendent
Matt Doherty informed the
hoard earlier he intends to
resign as soon as a replace
ment can be found.
According to the report
Monday the district will ad
vertise the position beginning

The lone City Council dis
cussed the possibility of hav
ing garbage collection service
contracted with a Hermiston
disposal company, reported
Diarina Starr, city recorder.
The City of lone owns its own
garbage truck and presently
the service is being handled
through the city. However,
Starr said, the service is not
cost effective and must be
subsidized.
The county's application for
the federal grant, which will
come from taxes on aviation
fuel, accompanies an $800,000
county master plan to im
prove the county airport in
Lexington.
Morrow County Court began
interviewing aviation en
gineers last week to make the
final detailed plan for con
struction. Under the improved plan,
offices in the county with the
following hours: Lexington -Monday,
Wednesday and Fri
day from 8 to 10:30 a.m.;
Irrigon Tuesday and Thurs
day from 8 to 10:30 a.m. As
inspections require a majority
of time in the field, the staff
has requested that appoint
ments be made for those times

Superintendent Doherty.
"You received more and
spent less than you thought,"
said auditor Brent Fife. "This
is a credit to your administra
tion. They didn't spend it down
as I have seen done in other
places."

Swanson Insurance recently
installed a new computer
which Brownfield will be us-
ing. One of the computer's
uses will be to determine how
much crop insurance farmers
need, she said. Thiss will be
demonstrated at a Crop Insur
ance Seminar October 12 in
lone. More details about the
seminar will be announced
next week.
After obtaining her license,
Brownfield will be ab)e to sell
insurance for V company,
which is a full st. . ce agency.
