Box 337 Heppner, OR 97836 The Heppner Merchants' softball team finished their double headers at the Lexing ton field with a record of 3-3. With the injury of another team member. Delbert Bin nchus, the Merchants added John Boyer to the roster. Binxchus chipped his elbow in a game played in a Pendleton tournament held during the Fourth of July holiday. The Merchants' first oppon ent was Rich's Pay less of Hermiston with the visitors capping a 14 8 victory. The first inning saw Ron Bowman and LaVerne Van Marter slugging home runs for the Merchants. Rich's scored three in the second while the Merchants added two more on John Hover's double and Mark Pointer scoring with a fielders choice. The next scoring came in the fourth as John McCabe, Boyer and Jamie Query scored for the Merchants. The visitors added five to lead by one run. Heppner managed only one more run in the sixth as Dave Eckman scored on a fielders' choice. The victors added six in the seventh to ice the win. Heppner fought back and outscored Rich's 15-12 in a game that immediately followed. Heppner scored first in the second inning as John McCabe. John Boyer, Dan Mathews and Mark Pointer crossed the plate, The third inning saw Rich's scoring two runs while Mike Rowell led off the third for the Merchants with a triple. He scored along with LaVerne Van Marter and McCabe. In the fourth, Dallas Harsin led off with a double while George Waterland and Van Marter loaded the bases for McCabe's home run. A triple followed by John Boyer failed (o count. Rich's followed in the fourth with two runs while Heppner kept the lead in the fifth as Pointer. Eckman, Harsin and Waterland scored the victory runs. Rich's came up with three runs and five in the seventh but it was not enough to catch Heppner. In a game that went 10 innings. Heppner edged Mid way 14-13. In the first inning LaVerne VanMarter slugged a three run homer scoring Ron Bow man and George Waterland. The next two runs came from John McCabe and Mike Rowell, who bagged a double. Midway came back with three runs. In the third inning, Heppner Merchants Mark Pointer. Van Marter and Why yonrphone Dill OWIlo McCabe scored with McCabe hilling a double. Midway followed with three runs in the third and two in the fourth. In the fourth inning, the Merchants' Dan Mathews scored and in the fifth Jamie Query and Dallas Harsin both scored. Midway scored its final runs in the sixth while Heppner tied the score in the seventh and sent the game into extra in nings. McCabe and Rowell gave the Merchants the tie. The final run came In the 10th as Harsin hit a triple and Waterland scored him on a sacrifice fly. John McCabe's three run homer in the sixth gave the Merchants the edge to beat Midway 16-12 in the second game of the double header. The game was called in the sixth inning due to darkness. Midway jumped out on the scoreboard with a 5-1 lead in the first. Heppner's one run came on George Waterland's single. Each team scored in the third as Midway gained one and Mark Pointer scored as he slugged a double. In the fourth, Midway added two more and Heppner play ers John Boyer and Dallas Harsin scored. The fifth saw Boyer get a two-run homer as he scored . V ; i'. ; . . - .,. A triple by John McCabe gave them one more run. The last inning was the sixth and Midway managed four runs while the Merchants iced the win with nine runs. Crossing the plate were Ron Bowman. Waterland. Pointer, Van Marter, McCabe, Rowell, Dave Etkrnan, Boyer, Harsin and Mathews. The Heppner Merchants bowed to a tough Swain Mo tors of Hermiston in two straight games, 15-6 and 10-9. In the first game Heppner only managed 10 hits while Swain had 20. Heppner's first scoring came in the first as Ron Bowman and Jeff Orr scored. They followed with another run in the second by Jamie Query. Their last runs came in the fifth as Bowman and Water- land crossed the plate and in the seventh inning as Mathews scored. In the following game, Hep" pner fought courageously but fell short by one run, 10-9. Mike Rowell had the first Heppner run In the second. Swain also added one run. In the third, Bowman and Waterland each scored with Swain staying close by tying the game with two more runs. Swain's team kept their bats alive as they scored two in the fourth, the final two innings saw the Merchants score four in the sixth as Mark Pointer, John McCabe, Dave Eckman, and Jamie Query scored. During the seventh inning, Bowman got the lone Heppner run as Swain's picked up five runs to take home the victory. P.A.T.C.H. Committee gets ready for Sat. sale ByNEOLAMACKEY The P.A.T.C.H. Committee is preparing for a bake and rummage sale on Saturday, July 30. The sale will begin at 9 a.m. at the Heppner Neigh borhood Center. Ladies who attend the Thursday craft and social times at the center are work ing hard to prepare for "Heppner Daze" on Saturday. They will have numerous craft items for sale in front of Case Furniture. G.E.D. and Adult High School classes have been dis missed for the summer and will resume in the fall. Adult and Family Services counselor Janet Phillips will be available at the center August 3 to take food stamp applications. Applications are available at the center any time during the week. A free blood pressure clinic will be held Wednesday, Aug. 3. at the center. The center is much in need of a freezer. Donations will be accepted by the ladies who attend the Thursday afternoon social time at the center. Those who wish to donate to the effort may contact Martha King at 676-5282 at home, or at the center. 676-5873. The old freezer, which is beyond repair, is used to store foods that are donated to the center. All t ypes of food are also needed at the center.
