July 14, 1W3 Merchants win 4 straight games The Heppner Merchants softball team rallied from last week's defeat to win four straight games on the Lexing ton diamond despite the loss of Mike Smith, Mark Lovgren and Gary Kemp. Smith is out for the entire season due to knee surgery. Lovgren broke his finger earlier in the season and is out indefinately, while Kemp is out with a sprained foot for three weeks. In the first game the Mer , chants outscored Dairy Queen by a margin of 3-1. Dairy Queen was the first to score as they collected a run in the second on a Heppner error. Heppner collected seven hits in the third as Ron Bow man started the inning with a base hit. Dan Mathews fol lowed with a fielders choice putting Bowman out at second. Mark Pointer singled and George Waterland fol lowed with a single. All three scored as John McCabe collec ted an RBI with a single to clinch the victory. In the last game of the doubleheader, the Heppner Merchants outscored Dairy Queedn 16-9 as four Merchants bagged triples. In the first inning John McCabe and Jamie Query slugged triples and scored, and George Waterland also added another run. The Merchants continued to hit and take advantage of Dairy Queen's mistakes as 11 batters stepped to the plate in the next inning. Mark Pointer, Dave Eck man. John Smith, LaVerne Van Marter. Jamie Query and Dallas Harsin crossed the plate giving the Merchants a W) lead. The third inning saw Dairy Queen get on board with one run. followed by four runs in the fourth and four in the fifth. Stanfield Drug lost two straight games the following night as the Merchants took 11-10 and 11-1 victories. In the first game s diving catch in the last inning by fielder Dave Eckman saved the game for the Merchants. Stanfield Drug jumped out to an early four-run lead. The Merchants tied the opposing team with four runs as John Smith, John McCabe, Jamie Query and George Waterland scored with Delbert Binschus collecting two R.B.I.'s. Stanfield scored again in the third as they got a home runa and another run in the fourth. LaVerne, Van Marter's three-scoring run home run highlighted the fifth inning for the Merchants as Van Marter, Mark Pointer and John McCabe crossed home base. Stanfield's final four runs came in the sixth. The Merchants scored again in the sixth as Dave Eckman and Ron Bowman added two in the seventy: Jeff Orr belted a double and Jamie Query Rice wins all-around cowboy title at Condon rodeo Heppner cowboy Lee Rice, 1981 National bareback champion, won the Ail-Around Cowboy title at Condon's Fourth of July Rodeo. He also took first place in the bare back riding both days with scores of 74 and 69. Other local cowboys and cowgirls who placed in events at the Sunday rodeo were: Jeff Bailey, second in bare back riding. Cindy Stroeber -second in junic- barrel racing. The Merchants kept the ball rolling as they collected four more in the second on Dave Eckman's triple. Stanfield Drug struggled to get one run in the third as the Merchants added one in the fourth on John Smith's triple. Heppner scored their last two runs in the fifth as George Waterland and Jamie Query scoring with Dallas Harsin picking up an R.B.I. A double play ended the game as the Merchants third baseman George Waterland threw to Mike Rowell on second and Rowell threw to La Verne Van Marter on first. breakaway roping and first in pole bending: Cliff Dougherty - second in calf roping, third in bull dogging, second in team roping with Monte Evans and sixth in team roping with Scott English. Monday's performance saw these local cowboys earn top places: Don Kindsfather - first in calf roping. Mike Currin - first in bull dogging. The yard, located on Third St. between C and D streets, is small but colorful with a hanging basket and containers of flowers on her front porch, describes a club member. Mrs. Akers also has flowers on both sides of her yard. 'The street parking (area) is well kept, neat and color ful." the spokesperson said. Ron Bowman was Hep pner's top golfer, scoring a 77 to take low gross honors. Bowman also took long drive and closest to the pin awards. Net score place winners were: first John McCabe, second -Travis Hiatt. third - Rob Jep sen and fourth - Dunne Disque. The next interclub events on the Willow Creek calendar are . July 24 when the Condon and Kinzua clubs come to Hep pner. and on July 31 when Heppner goes to Kinzua.
