The workshop takes place during the Artifactory in the 4-H Annex building which is attached to the main room of the fairground pavilion build ing. The Heppner Garden Club provides a supply of green boughs, wire circles and rib bon bows and other trimming items for wreaths, swags, table pieces and other decora tions. Experienced garden club members are there to instruct and assist newcomers during Topic Club members learn about Thailand A most interesting program was presented by Marie Rietmann. a 1981 international Four-H Youth Exchange stu dent from Condon, for mem bers of the lone Topic Club on November 17 at the home of Martha Peterson. Marie is the daughter of Van and Rosie Rietmann and her paternal grandmother. Ruth (Riet mann) Shane, was a charter member of the North lone Improvement Club, forerun ner of the lone Topic Club. As a part of the I.F.Y.E. program Rietmann spent three months in Thailand liv ing with 10 different families ranging from one very weal thy family to others of very meager means, reported a Topic Club member. Some interesting facts she gave to the members included: 95 percent of Thais are Buddhists and all young men must study Buddhism; houses there are built on stilts: one-fourth of contests and presentations. She also shared her skills by assisting 4-H staff with special training programs. An honor student at lone High School, she was active in school government, as a cheerleader and in many extra curricular activities. In her application for na tional awards Morter claims that 4-H opened new worlds for her and allowed learning and experiences she would never have had without 4-H. In her own works she tells how she learned by mistakes and trying, and of disappoint ments as well as achieve ments which prepared her for life beyond her high school years. She shares, too, the joys she found in helping brothers, sisters and younger club members. All 4-H members attending congress were selected on the basis of their outstanding work and overall achievement in the youth education pro ;teak n Just Saturday Nite Live II Dinner All Nite 6:30p.m. Dance All Nite 8:30p.m. Turkey Hour 8:30-9:30 Q Hfticin timr Qtwnnt the workshop. All of the needed workshop items will be available for sale on Saturday. Fresh Oregon holly will also be sold. As a special, new feature this year, the garden club plans to be showing two series of colored slides on "Christmas Trees Around the World" and on "Christmas Arrangements the homes have TV; cooking is done over an open fire on a wok a great deal of the time; Thai food is very hot with spices; food is purchased from floating markets or street markets: transportation is by three-wheeled bicycles; ex tended families of two or more generations often live toge ther; 500.000 refugees from Cambodia, Vietnam and other surrounding countries live in Thailand: three crops of rice are grown yearly; and educa tion is compulsory through the first six grades. Oregon has participated in the I.F.Y.E. program for 32 years. At the business meeting it was reported that the Library Board had sorted out about 60 books in the childrens' and young adults' category to be sent to Zimbabwe through United Church of Christ World Ministries to help natives learn English. gram of the Extension Ser vice. There will be no charge for watching the slide program. The Heppner Garden Club's December meeting will be combined with a Friday night work session at the workshop location. All members need to come Friday evening, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m.. with their greens clippers, ready to make a few wreaths and swags to have as samples and for sale on Satur day. They will have a chance then to preview the slides that will be shown during the workshop, club president Theta Lowe announces. The idea for the Greens Workshop originated with a former garden club leader, the Rev, Ed Cutting of United Methodist Church, many years ago. Cutting was an experienced and artistic hor ticulturist before he entered the ministry. For quite a few years the annual Greens Workshops were held in the basement of the Methodist Church, but after the Artifac tory got situated at the fair grounds, the workshop was moved along -side that event. Each year recently the show ing and sale of paintings by Morrow County artists has been held in the 4-H Annex space along with the Greens Workshop.
