The Heppner Gazette-Time, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, September 9, 1982 SEVEN 3MflQ00O00OOOQOOOOOOOO ? C-T Oasmffifiois - Buy -lell-TVaae - 676-9228 1 1982 game bird seasons set Oregon's game bird hunters will not find the bonanza In bird populations they have the last two years, and hunters will have to work longer and harder to fill their game bags this year, said a news release from the Oregon Department of Pish and Wildlife. A hard winter reduced popu lations of adult birds, and the cold, wet spring reduced nest ing production considerably In most species. Seasons set for 1982 reflect the reduction In bird numbers with shorter seasons for some species and reduced bag limits for many. On the bright er side, however, blue and ruffled grouse populations, and dove and band-tailed pigeon numbers are up some what this year. And a limited sage grouse season, by permit only In four areas, has been set for the first time since 1975. The seasons for blue and ruffled grouse opened state wide on August 28. In Western Oregon plus Hood River and 1 Wasco counties, the season will run through November 10, and then reopen November 27 through December 31. On the east side, a single season will close September 26. Daily bag limit statewide is three grouse per day, nine in possession. On September 1 the seasons for mourning doves and band tailed pigeons opened state wide. Both seasons will run through September 30, Daily bag limit for doves is 15 with a possession limit of 30. For band-tails the daily bag limit is five, with five in possession. The season for chukar and Hungarian partridge will open concurrently with deer season on October 2. In Eastern Ore gon the season will run through December 31 with a daily bag limit of six birds and a possession limit of 18, except In Baker, Grant and Wallowa counties where the bag limit Is four and possession limit is 12. West of the Cascades and in Klamath County, the par tridge season ends November 14. and the daily bag limit Is two with six in possession. Pheasant season will open October 16 statewide. In East ern Oregon the season will end November 28 and the daily bag limit is two with eight in possession. The Western Ore gon season will run through November 14 with a daily bag limit of two and possession limit of six. No hen pheasants will be allowed in the bag this year. The valley quail season will also open October 16 state wide. In Eastern Oregon It will close December 31 and in Western Oregon on November 14. The daily bag limit state wide is five with ten In posses sion. The season for mountain quail will run October 16 through December 31 in East ern Oregon, and from August 28 through November 10, and November 27 through Decem ber 31 in Western Oregon, plus Hood River and Wasco counties. The eastside bag limit is two, with the posses sion limit also two. In Western Oregon the daily bag limit is five with ten in possession. A controlled spring turkey gobbler season was again established with 825 tags available in the same five areas as last year. Three seasons will be held In the North White River, Friend, and Rock Creek areas to allow additional hunting opportun ity. Two seasons will be held In northeast and southwestern Oregon. AH seasons begin in April 1983. A very limited season for sage grouse will take place September 18 and 19 with a daily bag limit of two and two allowed in possession. The areas in which hunts are available include North Wag ontire, South Wagontire, Har ney County portion of Juniper Unit and Harney County por tion of Baatys Butte Unitr Each unit has 100 tags except South Wagontire which has 50, for a total of 350 tags. Waterfowl seasons will be generally similar to last year. The duck, coot and snipe season will open October 16 and close on January 16. Duck season will be an addition week longer in Columbia Basin counties, closing on Jan uary 23. The daily bag limit for ducks will be seven, with 14 In possession. This limit may Include not more than two redheads, two canvasbacks, or one each. Twenty-five is the daily and possession limit for coots and the snipe daily bag limit will be eight, with 18 in possession. The season for geese will run October 16 through Jan uary 16 statewide, with the same additional week in Col umbia Basin counties. In Western Oregon the daily bag limit is two, and the possession limit is also two. In two areas on the coast, goose hunting is closed this year in order to protect a federally endangered species, the Aleu tian goose, which has been found wintering In increasing numbers. Closed areas in clude the portion of Coos and Curry counties west of High way 101, and that portion of Tillamook County lying south of an east -west line through the most westerly point of Cape Lookout. In most of Eastern Oregon the daily limit is three (which may be extended to six pro vided three are dark geese and three white geese), with six in possession. In Baker and Malheur counties a shorter season will be in effect, ending January 2, with a dally bag limit of two and two in posses sion. In Klamath and Lake counties the early part of the season, from October 16 through 31, the daily bag limit is one (may be extended to three provided two are white geese), and the possession limit Is two. Beginning Nov ember 1, the limit goes to three per day and six in cont. p.
