Kri; Fishbnrn, Anne Miles, and Renoe Strutters Heppner Elementary School will be sponsoring an AAU Junior Olympics Track and Field Meet Saturday, May 22, at the Heppner High School Track, announced Phyllis Payne, meet director. Registration for all events will take place Saturday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. Participants must register at that time. Payne said and late registration at the event will not be permitted. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. with field events taking place first. Running events will follow, she said. The age divisions sanction ed for this meet are: 10 and under. 11 - 12. 13 - 14. Any participant 12 and un der may compete in three events including relays: 13-14 age division participants may compete in four events includ ing relay. Payne said there will also be an opportunity for children seven and under to compete. The events for these young sters are standing lng jump, 50 m. dash, and softball throw. This track meet may be used to qualify athletes for the state Junior Olympics that will be held in Portland, June 12 and 13. Only athletes who meet or better qualifying standards will be allowed to advance to the state meet. (Youngsters seven and under are not eligible to advance to the state meet), she said. "It is the purpose of this program to give every boy or girl who so desires, the oppor tunity to compete regardless of ability. The Heppner High boys' and girls' golf teams concluded their seasons over the last two weeks with the girls partici pating in a district meet at Crooked River and the boys at Kahneeta. said coach Duane Neiffer. "Ten of 18 prep golfers from Heppner qualified to play in these meets and both the boys and the girls' teams placed sixth, which for the boys in cluded seven schools and the girls, nine schools." said Neif fer. The girls' meet included all AA and AAA schools east of the Cascades and the boys meet consisted of all AA and A schools east of the Cas cades. Lorri Day and Anne Mc Laughlin were low winners for Heppner. both carding a 233 over 36 holes on the Crooked River course. Low for the Heppner boys was Don Lott with a 167 on the challenging Kahneeta course, Neiffer said. Overall, Lott placed sixth and McLaughlin and Day both placed 17th. Only the four low golfers qualify for state meets, the girls' to be held in Portland and the boys' in Salem, the coach said. Roth Lott and Day are seniors this year. Day being a three year letlerman and Lott a four year letterman. Girls individual scores: Lor ri Day - 233: Anne McLaughlin - 233; Jodi Mattison - 284: Kristi Polzen - 274; and Kris Fishburn - 289. Boys individual scores: Don Lott - 167: Eric Thompson - Jeff Sumner, Rod Cole, Mat Miles, Eric Thompson and Don 202: Cam George - 207; Jon Mitchell - 239: and David Green - 214. Margaret Doherty in the 400 meter run. Doherty ran her best this year as she crossed the finish line in 59.27. Doherty finished first in her heat in the semi-finals on Friday with a time of 59.53. This gave her the best time entering the finals. The finals in the 400 meter run were run on Saturday at 2:10 p.m. After one false start the race was under way. Do herty jumped out to the lead hut was closely followed by Arietta Reese of Echo. But when they came to the finish," line. Doherty was a step ahead. Reese followed second in 59.5. Denny Starr competed in the discus on Friday as he threw 126'4". Starr also com peted in the javelin on Satur day and threw 156'. Starr failed to make the finals in either event. Tim Patton competed in the high jump on Friday. Patton cleared 6'0" but went out at fi'l". Patton finished eighth but medals were only given to the top six finalists. Donnie Taylor finished third in his heat in the semi-finals as he was edged for a spot in the finals. Taylor had a time of 16.7.
