I f ! Mr. and Mrs. Cornett Green By JUSTINE WEATHERFORD On a golden Sunday afternoon March 7, 175 persons signed the guest book at the golden wedding reception for Florence and Cornett Green at the United Methodist Church. This couple, the parents of three sons and one daughter, was born and has always lived in Heppner. They were married on March 5, 1932 in Pendleton (they eloped.) Their life together began during the great depression when Cornett bought a truck and hauled wool and grain. He then became manager for Interior Warehouse in Heppner and was a grain buyer and agent for Balfour -Guthrie before he began Cornett Green Feed in 1956. Florence worked daily in the office of the feed company until they sold the store six years ago to the Lee Ansoteguis. All four of the Green's children, along with their children and other family members gathered for a dinner in the church basement on Saturday evening. Eighty-five Greens enjoyed the meal and visit the night before the community reception. On Sunday, most of the visiting family members helped fill the church during morning worship. During the years that he operated his business, Cornett has been active in the Methodist Church, in the Odd Fellows Lodge and on the County Planning Commission. He also is a rancher, still operating a small cattle ranch near Heppner which belonged to his parents, Alex and Mattie Green and which he bought from other heirs after Mattie's death. Florence besides mothering their four children, and working in the feed store office, has been a helper and ardent supporter at the Public Library and for many years, an outstanding member of the Bookworms literary club, along with her many church activities. The four Green children are Marion, now living at Reedsport, whose children are Greg, Howard and Joel; Jim who lives at Arlington and whose children are Bryan and Janice. Janice's little daughter Melissa is the first Green great-grandchild. Daughter Mary Ruth lives at LaGrande and her children are Marci and Mike. The youngest son Steve, lives in Pendleton and his four sons are Scott, Mark, Wayne and Adam. At the Sunday reception, each child and his children wore different colored flowers to help folks who had not known all these Greens, or had forgotten who belonged to whom, to distinguish the different sub-families.
