I David and April Hilton Sykes, Publishers J Obituaries Duck Yeilll Lee PORTLAND - A former Heppner man. Duck Yeun Lee 79. died Monday. February 15 at a Portland hospital. Mr. Lee spent his early life in Portland and was graduat ed as an honor student from Heppner High School. He served in the Navy before and during World War II. He was the owner of Duck's Auto Co. and president of the Tai Ping Restaurant. He also worked for Kirby Florist and for Multnomah County Hosp ital. There are no close family survivors. Services were held Monday, February 22 at Portland Memorial Funeral Home. Vernon (Pete) Gilman HEPPNER - Vernon (Pete) Gilman. 81. of Heppner, died Friday, February 19, 1982. at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 22, at Sweeney Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. John O'Brien officiating. Carlita Bloodsworth and Dave Piper sang, accompanied by Betty Marquardt at the piano. Casket bearers were Gary Munkers. Steve Munkers. Dale Munkers. Greg Greenup and Bill Greenup and Mitch Ashbeck. Concluding services and interment were at Hep pner Masonic Cemetery with Sweeney Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Mr. Gilman was born Oct. 26. 1899, in Genesee. Idaho, the son of Charles and Agnes Smith Gilman. The family moved to Grant County where he was raised. He worked in several locations before com ing to Heppner. He had been employed at the Kilkenny Greenup ranch for 49 years. A excellent bowler, Mr. Gilman was the oldest mem ber of the 'Heppner Bowling League. He was married to the former Myrtle Aiken, who preceded him in death in 1964. Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Contributions may be made, for those who wish, to the Pioneer Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Oregon Lung Association. JUSTICE COURT Justice Court at the Morrow County Courthouse in Heppner handled the following cases during the past week: Joseph Christopher Brant ley. 20 of Heppner - Suspended Operators License. $260 fine. Arthur Ray Bierly, 34 of Woodland, Wash. - Exceeding the Maximum Speed Limit (70 mph in a 55 mph zone ) . $55 bail forfeited. Joseph Edward Alford, 34 of Heppner - Violation of the Basic Rule (52 mph in a 35 mph zone). $28 fine. Douglas Gail Potter, 21 of Condon - Violation of the Basic Rule (48 mph in a 35 mph zone). $22 fine. Darryl John Bigelow, 20, Heppner - Disobeyed Stop Sign $14 fine. Robin Don Scott, 19, Hep pner - Unnecessary Tire Noise. $19 fine. Marvin Ernest Peterson, 35, Lexington - Exceeding the Maximum Speed Limit (66 mph in a 55 mph zone) $8 fine. John L. Spence HERMISTON - John L. Spence. 81. died Saturday. Feb. 20. 1982. at Good Samar itan Center in Hermiston. Funeral services were held Tuesday. Feb. 23. at Sweeney Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Cathy Barker officiat ing. Carlita Bloodsworth and Dave Piper sang, accompan ied by Betty Marquardt at the piano. Casket bearers were William Irvin, George Irvin, Stuart Smith, Virgil Spence, Dorrell Spence and Earl Miller. Concluding services and interment were at Lexing ton Cemetery. Mr. Spence was born Aug. 12. 1900 at Cove, the son of Thomas and Frances Horton Spence. He lived most of his life in the Baker County and North Powder area where he was employed by Pacific Power & Light Co. He resided in the Lexington area for 30 years, moving a little over a year ago to the Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston. Survivors include a sister. Florence McMillan, of Herm iston: nieces Delpha Jones. Lexington: Jo Irvin. Irrigon: Pat Cool. Pendleton, and numerous other nieces and nephews. For those who wish, contri butions may be made to the Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston, or to the Oregon Lung Association. Road Report The Morrow County Public Works Department has releas ed the following Work Report for the week ending February 13 and 20: During the past two weeks, pot holes were patched with cold mix on the following roads: Ione-Boardman, Bren ner Canyon, Balm Fork, Baseline, Boardman-Irrigon, Root Lane, Patterson Junction and the Irrigon-Ordinance Road. Roads bladed and graveled were: Juniper and Doherty Alpine. Bladed only were: Eubanks Road, N-S Morgan Road, Albert Lindstrom Road, and the Baker E-W Road. Culverts were cleaned and brush burned on Kunze Road and French Road. Reflectors were replaced on Eighth St. in Irrigon and trees and stumps were removed from the right of way on Cemetery Road and Washing ton Street. Extensive ditching and shoulder work on the Clarks Canyon Road has been a major project. Shoulder work was also done on the Paul Brown Road. Frost heaving has been a major problem on the oiled roads the past two weeks. "Everyone's cooperation is needed during these times as one heavy load on a soft road can cause several thousand dollars damage per mile. Please ovserve the posted limits on the roads, so the damage can be kept to a minimum, which will greatly reduce our future mainten ance costs," said a Public Works Dept. spokesperson. The road maintenance crew will return to the four 10 hour day schedule on March 1. The road shop will be closed on Fridays but the office will remain open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. February 25, 1982 Engagements Brookshire - Edmundson g- 1 "" 'nags - I w 111 $ f I 1 l f 5,. 5f - li f Walter Brookshire and Vickie Edmundson Mr. and Mrs. John Edmundson of Heppner, announce the engagement of their daughter, Victoria, to Walter Brookshire, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brookshire of Union. Vicki and Walt are in their final year of pharmacy at Oregon State University. They will graduate this spring. Vicki graduated from Heppner High School in 1977. Walt graduated from Union High School in 1976. An afternoon wedding is planned for April. 3. The, ceremony will take place at All Saints Episcopal Church in Heppner. Anniversaries Greens to celebrate 50th anniversary The children of Florence and Cornett Green are hosting an open house in honor of their parent's fiftieth wedding anniversary. The celebration will be held Sunday, March 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Heppner. All friends and relatives are cordially invited to attend. The honored guests request no gifts. Marriage Licenses A marriage license application was received at the Morrow County Clerk's office at the Morrow County Courthouse in Heppner from: Darrell Edwin Dosser, 25 and Christina June Morgan, 21, both of Heppner. Christian Women's Club schedules meeting Mar. 2 The Christian Women's Club will hold a meeting next Tuesday. March 2. 6:45 p.m. at the Degree of Honor Hall in Heppner. Theme for the meeting will be "Walk Softly and Carry a Big Stick." Special feature will be a self protection demonstration and discussion by Steven Conover of the Heppner Police Depart ment. Senior news Karen Thomas, R.N. from Tri County Home Health Agency will conduct a free blood pressure check Wednes day, March 3 at the Heppner Mealsite. The checkups will begin at 11:15 a.m. Discount bowling for seniors (60 years and over) is being held every Wednesday and Thursday at the Heppner bowling alley. All February birthdays will be celebrated Wednesday. February 24. 12 noon at the Heppner mealsite. lone and Lexington resi dents needing a ride to Heppner on Wednesdays are asked to call Dot Halvorsen. 422-7143 to make arrange ments. Seniors attending the noon meal at the mealsite are not charged for transportation. For those over 60 who do not attend, the cost is 75 cents round trip. Cost for commu ters under 60 is $1.50. DMV schedule The Heppner field office of the Department of Motor Vehicles will be open through out the month of March, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 to 5 p.m., except for the following days: March 1,2,3 and 4 - regional manager's conference; and March 17 - Fossil office open. Peterson's Heppner IT'S BULOVA WMHMMI sheriff's REPORT The Morrow County Sher iff's Office at the Morrow County Courthouse in Heppner handled the following calls during the past week: On February 16, an ambul ance was requested at U & I Inc., Boardman for a woman reported to have an eye injury. A Boardman ambu lance responded to the call. On February 19, Rocky Martin Radabah. 22. was arrested by Hermiston Police Department on i Morrow County warrant for allegedly negotiating a bad check. Also on February 19. Donald James Hams, 31 of Heppner was arrested by a Heppner City Police officer for alleged ly Driving under the Influence of Intoxicants. Cheese still available Heppner Neighlmrhood Cen ter Coordinator Pat Rrindle has announced that govern ment surplus cheese is still available at the center. Those who qualify may pick up their cheese at the center, she said. Brindle also stated that the center has received notice that Fuel Assistance will not be available after April 1. 1982 because funds have been expended. However, those needing Fuel Assistance may still sign up before April 1. she added Heppner area residents wanting to sign up for assist ance may do so at the Heppner Neighlmrhood Center.
