The Cardinals were defeated 51 - 61. The Cardinals staved riht with the Vikins in the first quarter as they were only out scored by one point 12 - 13. Craig Gutierrez scored 11 points in the second quarter to keep the Cardinals within two points at the half 20 - 31 The Vikincs came out in the third quarter to pain some crouod ns thev oulscored the Cardinals bv six points. The Heppner Mustang var sity team came away with two more in the win column last weekend, after defeating Con don 81 - 60. at Condon Dec. 11. and 71 - 57 in a rematch at Heppner Dec. 12. "We beat them mainly by j dominating the boards." said s Mustang Coach Dale Holland. ; And indeed they did control the backboards. In game number one played at Condon, the Mustangs out-rebounded the Blue Devils more than two to one. 71 to 30. with forward Dorian Forrar and guard Dale Holland both gathering 12 apiece. Jeff Orr and Don Lott brought in 11 rebounds each. Heppner did very well in the scoring department too in the first game, making 37 of 79 attempts from the field for a 47 percent shooting average. "We did very well on our fast break." Holland said of both games. "We dominated the boards and got the ball out well on the outlet pass." Mustangs jumped out to an 18 to 8 lead at the end of the first quarter, and it was never really close after that. Dorian Forrar scored 12 of his team high 22 points in the first quarter to pace the Heppner squad. At the end of the half the Mustangs lead 38 to 21. and at the end of the third period they were up 63 to 37. Heppner 18 20 25 IS 81 Condon 8 13 Ifi 23 fill In the second game with Condon. Heppner again domi nated play on the backboards, and ran their fast break well to come awav with the victory, this time 71 to 57. The game was plaved in Heppner Dec. 12. "Condon plaved a better game when thev came here." said Head Coach Dale Hol land. The Blue Devils plaved good enough to lead the Mustangs 14 to 13 at the end of the first period.
