OSU Extension emphasizes conservation by Molly Saul. Extension Agent The emphasis will "Be on "Helping You Conserve Re sources" in the 1981 Oregon State University Extension Service family living-home economics program in Uma tilla and Morrow Counties, reports Molly Saul, Extension home economist. The program emphasis, which will continue for two years, grew out of the long range program development effort conducted throughout Oregon last year by the Extension Service, Mrs. Saul explains. "Hundreds of homemakers, men and women, were asked to participate in the program development process to help identify the needs of Oregon families during the next three to five years. "When the results of all the meetings and conversations , were tabulated, it was clear that resource conservation and management were the over-riding concerns of Ore gonians which Extension needs to address," Mrs. Saul points out. The importance of careful energy use in the face of increasing costs and short ages and the desire to learn more about managing the family's economic resources were the two needs most often identified, Mrs. Saul explains. "We are equally concerned with teaching people how to manage their time, how to eat nutritionally-balanced diets, and how to help children and adults achieve their full po tential as with energy and economics." Mrs. Saul em phasizes. While "Helping You Con ' serve Resources' will be the dominent theme of education al programs offered during the comming year, not all programs will be directly related to the theme as the Extension Service will conti nue to offer a balanced program designed to meet a variety of educational needs, Mrs. Saul notes. As usual, the Umatilla and Morrow counties Extension family living program will offer a variety of ways for people to get the information they need to help them live better lives. The Extension study groups in the two-county area are seeking new members. These are informal learning groups which meet monthly and which are open to all people without regard to race, color, national origin or sex. The lessons are taught by volun teer leader-teachers. The Extension Service will again offer a series of public meetings on special interest topics and workshops throughout the year. These programs may last one after noon or evening, or may continue for up to six meet ings. They are open to all interested people usually without charge. In addition, the county offices of the Extension Ser vice have a wide variety of bulletins and fact sheets available free to Oregon residents on such topics as food preservation, home in sulation, aging, clothing se lection and construction, and child care and nutrition. More information about Home Extension programs is available from county Exten sion offices in Heppner. Pen dleton. Hermiston and Milton Freewater.
