Close to Homer Mary Ann Cerullo Last Autumn I wrote a letter aimed toward the community of Heppner and today I would like to say it again: Dear Heppner, Six weeks ago my husband and I moved into a new community completely foreign to us, Morrow County. The trip out from Portland was long and stifling in an old 1940 U-Haul truck. Most of my family was able to make the drive out to help us. It took two full days for everyone to discover just how much heavy junk we had hauled here. With the unloading done and boxes stacked high, furniture still not set up, Larry and I silently watched the family pile into their station wagon and disappear down the hill. "Don't go..." I whimpered to myself, "Don't leave us here -all alone." We felt as if the new brown house was an island on a : barren unfamiliar sea. It was our haven in a strange land. Then it happened. The storm broke. We were discovered! Neighbors welcomed us into their homes, collegues offered advice, an educational tour of the county was given, invitations to meetings arrived and we discovered there were other new people like us. The big brown house is now our home. We have begun decorating it to our taste with what we can afford. The garden is being planted for the fall, and Larry and I are making plans for the future. The island we created that we thought so small has expanded far into the "high country". We have found a new world on the other side of the mountain filled with golden hills and friendly people. We are happy. Thank you.
