Don Barber's team pulled
away midway through the
second half to lead by as many
as 13 points and held on to
defeat lone. 75-68. and capture
the Heppner men's city league
basketball championship
Thursday night.
Barber's, who finished the
season with a 15-1 record, also
avenged a 51-31 loss to lone
earlier this season, lone
finished the year at 12-3.
Barber's led at halftime.
40-32. and stretched that into a
56-43 lead in the middle of the j
second half Rut lone came
storming back and trailed by
just 62-59 with three-and-a-half
minutes to go in the game.
However, nine unanswered
points by Barber's put the
game away.
Barber's had a balanced
scoring attack with five men
scoring double figures. La
Verne Van Marter and John
McCabe scored 12 points
apiece. Jeff Betsinger and Jim
Bailey had 11 each, and
Delbert Binschus added 10.
For lone. Del IRue. Lee
Padberg. and Skye Krebs
popped in 14 points apiece.

under the direction of Gene
Murtv.
Former Irrigon man guilty of theft
An Ontario. Oregon, man.
Olliver L. Carver, was fined
$250 and ordered to pay $900
restitution to the Forest Ser
vice by a federal magistrate
on April 9.
Carver, who plead guily to
the theft of 297 poles from the
Umatilla National Forest, sold
the poles to a local mill. The
met t was discovered in July of
19B0. while Carver was living
in Irrigon, Oregon. He left the
area before the. case could be
heard in Federal Court, accor
ding to a Forest Service news
release.
It is illegal to sell poles
obtained on a National Forest
unless one has a commercial
permit.

A 4 II plant sale will tie held
this Friday and Saturday from
Ha m to 5 :10 p.m. and Sunday
afternoon, April 24. 25. and 26
at the melon stand Just west of
the C & H Market at Irrigon
The stand, called the Melon
Tree, is located on the
highway at 10th St.
This annual event is held by
411 leaders and 411 memliers
with the funds earned going
into the 4 II program to help
boys and girls of North
Morrow County in 4 II.
A large variety of plants will
m1 offered, such as garden
liedding plants, berry vines,
house plants and trees.
Anyone having donations of
plants please bring them to
the Melon tree stand or call
