It Is now operated by Bill and Janet Cooley and Doug and Nancy Howell. The name Stokes Landing hiis a colorful history. In the eurly days of the century It was the name of the port on the Columbia River. At one time a ferry boat traveled irom the landing to Coolidge on the Washington shore. Other boats on the river could dock close to shore because of the deep water at this location. The present Stokes Landing is a pleasant place for refresh ments with a nautical theme. They specialize in hamburg ers, a variety of ice cream and sandwiches, hot chili and salads. Any person with a birthdale between August . l8 and August 1, 1973, and lives within the Lexington-Heppner School Dist, can apply. Applications can be picked up at the Heppner School office. Candidates must bring their birth certificate and be ac companied by their parents or gaurdian at registration. Those players that were on the Giants. Dodgers, or Braves last year need not register. Forest Service, Devin's, Allstott's team win in first round playoffs Forest Service, Dick Devin'is. and Dave Allstott's teams stayed alive in the Heppner men's city league busketball playoffs with first round wins Sunduy night. Forest Service beat Les Schwab. 70- 59, Dcvin's team stopied Rick Johnston's team, 80 72, and Allstott's team blasted Mike Smith's team, 115-46. Forest Service got 26 points from Howard Burnside, 14 from Jim Doherty. and 11 from Hick Elston in posting a win. For Les Schwab, Tom Pointer had 14 points. Kevin Rountree. 11. and Jeff Cuts forth, 10. Jay Coil poured in 23 points and Mark Lovgren 18 to lead Devin's to a win. Roger and Rocky Britt tossed in 12 apiece for Devin's, while Johnston's was paced by GHry Van Arsdale with IB points and Gary Watkins with 10. Every man on Allstott's team scored in double figures, led by John Boyer with 31 points. Bruce Kestler with 25, and Ken Grieb with 21. Allstott added 14, Duane Disque. 13, and Mike Stookey. 11, in the win. Larry Smith's 11 points led Smith's team. In Sunday's second round games. Forest Service (2-12) will meet Barber 1 12-1 ) at 5 p.m.; Devin (7-6) will face lone (11-2) at 6; and Allstott (7-6) takes on F.ggers (10-2) at 7.
