Of the total tax levy of 51.3 mills to be paid by the property holders of the city of Heppner for 1930, more than half will go for schools, or 26.92 mills; roads claim 4.4 mills, state and county 8.18; city 10.1 and bond interest 1.7. Commissioner George A. Bleakman states the county will spend $59,000 for roads in 1931 ; he urges that the work be pushed rapidly. Woolmen's wives start first county unit. Meeting at the home of state President Mrs. W. P. Mahoney, the Heppner area women elected Mrs. Garnet Barratt, president of the unit, Mrs. Harold Cohn, vice president, and Mrs. R. A. Thompson, secretary -treasurer. In addition to these officers, charter members of the unit included: Mrs. W. H. Cleve land, Mrs. Margaret Farley, Mrs. Pat Healey, Mrs. Hen rietta Cohn, Mrs. Peter Slevi, Mrs. R. L. Thompson, Mrs. Jerome O'Connor, Mrs. J. W. Beymer, Mrs. Archie Ball, Mrs. Jack Hynd, Mrs. John Kenny, Mrs. John Kilkenny, Mrs. Frank Monahan, Mrs. Fred Lucas, Mrs. Frank Wilkinson, Mrs. William La Trace, Mrs. Frank S, Parker, Mrs. Orin Wright and Miss Bess Huddleston. First session of new county court proves busy. With Judge William T. Campbell presid ing, and Commissioners George N. Peck and George A. Bleakman attending, this term gives promise of being one of the liveliest held in many moons. Twenty Five Years Ago Two are renamed to the county fair board: W. E. Hughes, Heppner, and Charles Carlson, lone, were re-appointed and Willard Jones, Irrigon, was named to replace Willard Baker, Boardman, whose term expired January 1. Volume dropped sharply at the Hermiston livestock auc tion last Friday, sale manager Delver Anson reports. Top prices at the sale were: 12 cents a pound for fat hogs of 1700 pounds; 16.70 cwt. for fat lambs of 230 pounds; 10.10 cwt for a 330-pound sow; 20.50 cwt for a 240 pound veal ; 1650 cwt for a commercial steer of 1010 pounds; 16.00 cwt for two grain fed heifers of 1785 pounds. Eleven long-time members of the Heppner Elks lodge will be honored at a special old-timers night after to night's meeting, Milton Mor gan, exalted ruler announced. Those to receive pins and whom have been especially invited to attend tonights meeting are Francis Doherty, Lewis Batty, B. E. Isom (30-year pins); John Berg strom, Norman Florence, H. R. "Ike" Weatherford, O. G. Bergstrom (35-year pins); H. D. McCurdy, Sr., Bert Mason and Harold Cohn (40 years) and Curtis C. Rhea, a 50 year member. Committee chairmen of the Morrow County Basin Pro jects Committee were named by county chairman, Newt O'Hara. The group unani mously favored the construct ion of a low level dam of 255 feet at the John Day site, pointing out that considerable county land as well as the towns of Boardman and much of Irrigon would be flooded if a high dam were built. Barge loading at Morrow County docks would also be jeopar dized if a high dam is built. The committee chairmen named include William Bar ratt, Heppner, irrigation; Don Kenny, Irrigon, drainage; Garnet Barratt, Heppner, flood control; Kenneth Smouse, lone, power; Al Lamb, Heppner, navigation; O.W. Cutsforth, Lexington, recreation, fish, game and wildlife; Oscar Peterson, lone, industrial development; Dr. L.D. Tibbies, pollution control, and Garland Swan son, lone, municipal and domestic uses. Five Years Ago Don Hardwick. of Hardwick Logging, Kinzua. has been named Eastern Oregon Forest Practices Operator of the Year for the second vear in a row. The award is made yearly by the Eastern Oregon Forest Practices Committee and the Oregon State Board of Forestry. The board of directors of Heppner TV, Inc., unani rpnuslv voted at their monthly meeting to raise the sub scriber rates $1 per month, effective Jan. 1, 1976. This will increase the member's mon thly charge to $5, the 6-month temporary rate to $6 and FM service to commercial estab lishments to $3. The lone Rainbow Girls Assembly No. 89 is having a reception and installation cer emony in the Masonic Hall, lone, Jan 11, at 2 p.m, The reception will honor Arlcne Cannon, grand representative to Arizona from Oregon. Tammy Tucker will be installed as Worthy Advisor and she extends an invitation to friends and relatives to attend. In basketball, the Heppner Mustangs played one of their better games of the season as they defeated the Riverside Pirates.73-41, Saturday night on the Mustangs' home court.
