David and April Hilton Sykes, Publishers Letters to Seeks Spencer family history To the Editor: 1 have a copy of the Centennial Issue of the "Gazette-Times," Thursday, Aug ust 24, 1972. My grandfather, Daniel Taylor Spencer, ar rived in Heppner in the summer of 1873. There is an item in the paper that said the Spencer store was moved there from Ruggs. Could you tell me where Ruggs is or was,? It does not appear on any map in my possession. Also could you tell me what type of store the Spencer store was? My father was born in Heppner April 14, 1874; Taylor Spencer died in October, 1874. The widow and her children returned to Missouri and she remarried. My father was brought up by a stepfather and never knew much about his father's family until he was an adult. I am aware that Heppner has had at least one disastrous flood and that many records were lost but would very much appreciate anything that could tell something of those times past. I-realize that starting to gather information more than 100 years after may be asking the impossible. But it is now or never for I am almost the last of Byron Spencer's descend ants and the younger genera tion is anxious for some sort of " record. Ruby Spencer Cady (80) 18 N. However, we felt it would be just as appropriate to start off the New Year.) Dear Santa: A few things I would sure like for Christmas, the cost in dollars and cents isn't much, so maybe you can help. Can you help us put our nation back in the position of being a world leader and proud of it? Can you put into our government leaders of today a little bit of Roosevelt, Tru man, Eisenhower and Kenn edy who could say "yes" with pleasant meaning and "no" with stern answers to world problems. Can you put our nation back into a forward motion from the step that Neil Armstrong took on the moon? If you stop to think about it, that is about the time the productive minds of our people and this great government started slowing down. Can you give us back the true meaning of a handshake, a tear in a child's eye, a smile on one's face, a true "hello," "thank you" and "you're welcome"? Can you give us back the true meaning of Christmas and what you really stand for? I will help you all I can, Santa, just give me back AMERICA!
