The Cardinals jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the first quarter m Mark Pot ton scored all lone varsity girls break losing streak; take win by Michelle LaRue The lone varsity girls broke their losing streak at Umatilla O'riday night. The Cards ited the Vikings, 2G-24. It didn't look like anybody would score in the first quarter, but both teams fin ally got on the board. The score at the end of the quarter whs 4-fi in fuvor of the Vikings. lone couldn't seem to get the bull in the basket, as they only scored two points In the second quarter. The Vikings were ahead 6-12 at half-time. The third quarter was evenly matched as each team scored eight points. In the Mustangs lose to Pirates u 1 1 by Andrew Gorman Last Tuesday, Dec. 9, the Heppner Mustangs took on the Boardman Riverside Pirates with a disappointing score for Heppner. They lost to River side, 54 to 60. Bad passes and outside shooting lost the game for the Mustangs. Riverside out rebounded, out offensed, out-defensed and out-maneuvered Heppner to gain an extensive lead, 37 to 20. For Heppner there were six field goals with Jim Launer and Dorian Forrar both hav ing a total of four points apiece. Boardman was far in the lead with 11 buckets and two foul shots, giving them a total of 24 points the second quarter. Boardman's power ful center, Larry Wilson, led the high scorer in this quarter with nine points. After halftime, the Mus tangs seemed to get their " - 1 it ! ( ! , I nine Cardinal points. In the second quarter the Vikings responded with a strong fifteen-point effort to take a 21 to 16 lead, but the Cards closed to one at the half on a basket by Shawn LaRue, and a steal and lay-in by Treve Peterson to make the score 21-20 In favor of the Vikings. The Cards continued their fourth quarter the Cards decided it was time to take the lead lone scored 12 points to Umatilla's four points. Michelle LuRue scored five points in the fourth quarter to lead lone. The game got quite exciting in the fourth quarter as the score was always within three points. Umatilla was forced to foul in the last minutes of the game; lone made four free throws to help win the game. Coach McDougal comment ed, "We needed a win to get us rolling, I'm really glad that we got it." Leading the scoring for the ill I heads into the game. They worked their offense and buckled down on defense to out -score the Pirates this quarter by laying 17 points on top of their 14. This helped the Mustangs a little but wasn't quite enough to give them a lead. Don Lott and Doug Holland were the top scorers for this quarter with a big 4 points apiece. For Riverside, Karry Kenton had five points and Larry Wilson cooled down with four points. Wilson fouled out during the beginning of the fourth quarter which hurt Boardman a little. As the fourth and final quarter got under way, the Mustangs played the best defense they played all night. They held the Pirates to only nine points and Heppner boosted ahead, making eight field goals and one free throw shot. In the fourth quarter, Cardinal re serves took over the scoring action and out-scored the Viks, 14 to 5, for the 55-37 victory, landing the scoring for the Cardinals was LaRue with nine, followed by Cindy Drin kard with six. Cindy Drinkard had 26 of the 47 lone rebounds. lone shot 35 percent from the free throw line, while the Vikings shot a close 32 percent. Each team made six fr"e throws. Practice pays for Fillies JV by Sherry Cowett The first Heppner Fillies JV, home game, on Dec. 8, against the Riverside Piratettes. end ed 43-23 in Heppner's favor. Members on the JV team are: Sherry Clement, soph omore; Dawna Devin, junior; Denisc Kennedy, sophomore: Cathy Lindsay, freshman; Sheri McMinn, junior; Susy' Olsen, freshman; Derina Reid. freshman; Judi Ward, sophomore. This year's JV Fillies play very aggressively. The girls have been practising very hard and it shows. Cards was center Mark Patton with 14 points. Patton also led the Card rebounders with 12 boards. The Cards pulled down 45 rebounds to 33 for the Vikings. The Cards turned the ball over 22 times to only 18 for the Vikings. From the field the Cards out shot the Vikings as they were 25-71 for 35 percent from the field compared to 13-62 for 21 percent for the Viks. Mary Kincaid was the high point server with 19 points. Forty percent of the free throws were made.
