The Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Orfgon, Thursday, December 11, 1980-NINE Cards defeated by Mustangs by Michelle La Rue Afler a week of practice the lone varsity boys opened their acason against the Heppner MustnnRs. The Cards were Jiefcated 34-42. The Mustangs outscored the Cardinals, 6 11, in the first quarter. The second quarter was evenly matched as both teams scored 9 points each. Heppner had a S-point lead going into the loc ker room at half time. The Cardinals were out scored in the third quarter, 8 15. Thi Cardinals slowed the Mustangs dow n in the second quarter and ImiIIi clubs scored 9 points each to make the half time score ?0 to 1! in favor of lone boys bv Michelle l.altue The lone Imivs J V started their season off with a win as they defeated the Riverside Pirates 37 33. The Cardinals led through out the game. The score at the end of the firsk quarter was 163 The Cards only scored two points in the second quarter, and the Pirates took advan tage of this by scoring 12 points, lone went into the locker room with a lead of 3 points, 18 15. Heppner was never in the lead but did make a small comeback in the fourth quar ter. High scorer for the Card inals was Mark Pntton with 8 points. Others scoring for the Cards were Lea Thompson with B, and Jim McCabe, 5. Treve Peterson and Jeff Hams both had 4. and Ralph Morter 3 Shawn LaRue and Tim Patlon each had 2 points. Mark Palton pulled down 12 offensive rebounds and 5 defensive boards for the Cards, lone had 39 rebounds in all. Heppner pulled down two more as they had 41. The Cards shot S for 15 for 40 percent from the free throw line, the Mustangs shot 10 for 18 for 56 percent. Coach LnUue's comment on the game was, "We weren't really prepared for the game. We couldn't seem to make any points and this made us frustrated and caused us to make mistakes we wouldn't normally have made." lone's next game will be Friday. December 12. at Umatilla. On Saturday the Cards travel to Mt. The final score was 54-33. giving the Cards the second victorv of the year. jar -!. -- - - STUDENT OF THE WEEK Shawn LaRue The son of Mr. and Mrs. Del l.altue, Shawn Is a senior at; lone High School. He has maintained a grade point average J of 3 til with 4. for the first nine weeks this fall, is president of the National Hi r Society, and plays trombone in the Cardinal band. Shawn was a member of lone's State Championship football team for two years. He was voted first team defensive guard for l!7! and 1HK0 and second team offensive running back for IttSO on the Hig Sky All Star Team. He also plays varsity basketball and is on the track team. For the last two summers, Shawn has been a representative of region 12 to the National Junior Olympics Truck and Field Meet as a race walker. Saturday the Cardinals traveled to Hepp ner. On Tuesday the Cards were defeated. 32-45. Starters for the Cardinals were Margaret Doherty. Tammy Holtz. Mi chelle LaRue. Liz McElligott. and Anita Palmer. The Cards opened the scor ing for the game as LaRue was fouled on an attempted shot. She went to the free throw line for two points. Tlie second quarter was closely matched as both teams scored 8 points apiece. This gave the Pirates a 3-point advantage as they went to the locker room. As the teams came onto the floor for the third quarter it seemed that the Pirates want ed to play with six people. The crowd seemed especially loud, but the players didn't seem to notice until the score keepers brought it to their attention. A technical foul was called. The shot was made, and this brought the Cardinals within two points of the Pirates. The Cards couldn't seem to keep up and the third quarter ended with the Cards down. 22-34. The Cards were outscored by one point in the last quarter. The final score was 32-45. High scorer for the Cardin als was LaRue with 15. followed bv Tammv Holtz with Heppner 3 ends in triumph by Sherry f 'owett The girls varsity game on Saturday, Dec. 6, ended in triumph for the Heppner Fillies and in disappointment for lone. As the game ended the score was 62. Heppner, to 16, lone. This was the first game for Heppner and they look as if they are off to a good start. The Heppner team consists of Cindi Bergstrom. junior. The Cardinals shot 25 percent from the floor and 40 percent from the line. On Saturday. Dec. 6. the Cards played Heppner. The Cards were defeated. 16-62. The Cardinal girls did a good job defending the Mus tangs in the first quarter, allowing them to get only 11 points. The score at the end of the quarter was 4-1 1 in favor of the Mustangs.
