Harlem Clowns delight audience b? An drew Gorman Heppner scoring attack with 10 points. Greg Connor added nine points and five rebounds and Harry Groshens contrib uted eight points and six rebounds. Tom Huston had five points; and Mike Currin, Shane Laughlin, Jeff Orr, and Andy Samples scored four points apiece. Huston grabbed seven re bounds and Orr had six. Heppner had 17 steals in the game, including three each by Huston and Orr. The Heppner High school boys' junior varsity basketball team started out its season on a good note by rolling past the Columbia High JVs of White Salmon, Wash., 48-22, Friday night in the Heppner gym. The Mustangs' tough de fense enabled them to lead 12-0 at the end of the first quarter and they were never in trouble. Heppner led 2041 at halftime. Jay Hayes led a balanced In Coach Brent Eggers rating system, the Mustangs were led by Groshens with a 11 rating. Hays had a 10 rating, Huston 8, and Laughlin 5. Heppner outshot its oppon ent .407 to .151 from the field and from the foul line .444 to .400. The winners out-rebounded Columbia, 33-28. However, the Mustangs also committed more turnovers, 26 to 14. Coach Eggers was pleased for the most part nhmil his team's performance in its first game of the season. "We came out ready to play in the first quarter and won it with our defense." he said. "We made way too many turnovers and had problems with our of fense, but it was a good opening game for us." Five players for Egger's County Rodeo Committee to sponsor dance The Morrow County Rodeo Committee will sponsor a dance Sunday, Dec. 21 at the Mustangs open with loss by Andy Gorman The Heppner Mustang var sity basketball squad opened their season with a loss last Friday night, going down to the White Salmon Bruins by a score of 53 to 70. The first quarter proved to - be the deciding period of the game with the Mustangs cold as ice from the floor and the opposing team scoring at will. Heppner managed only 9 points in the first stanza, to the Bruins 27 counters. Although the Mustangs fought back in the final three quarters, and actually out scored their opponents in the last half, the first quarter deficit was too much to overcome. Heppner closed the gap and tightened up on defense in the second quarter, allowing White Salmon only 19 points while scoring 10 of their own. Heppner came out of the locker room for the second half ready to play basketball. In the next two quarters the Mustangs outscored their op ponents 18 to 14, and 16 to 10, under the hot hand of Robert Bier. Bier collected 4 buckets and two free throws in the third , quarter, and two field goals and one free throw in the fourth quarter, to pace the Mustangs in the second half comeback try.
